Upgrade Processor on Gateway DX4375-UR22?

My pc is running pretty slow. I use it for web shopping, photos, & home video watching. I added memory to equal 8GB now. I added a graphics card & new monitor. Now I'd like to upgrade the processor. I just need someone to tell me what my choices are. I am looking for speed, not necessarily gaming speed though. I would like to keep the same power supply. Any suggestions! Thanks so much.

What does your PC report is the CPU in it?

Interestingly when I research it, it shows a mobile processor (like laptop) the A6-5200.

If that is the processor then it is likely soldered direct to board so no chance of upgrading it.
If a different APU then you can get a marginal performance increase going to an A10 but for your use you need a better IPC (instructions per clock) and no upgrade is going to improve that by very much without completely upgrading cpu/mohterboard/ram to new platform.

A6-5200 is a non-socketed CPU so it is soldered directly onto the motherboard. To top it off you already have the best CPU available for your platform (called FT3).

If OP was going to do a full CPU motherboard change then serriously no point to get another super weak APU that is already 3-4 year old architectture.

not really anymore, in the old days a badly written floppy disk could brick your system but most can be updated via a windows application/usb, asrock uses their App shop to update drivers and the BIOS.

So the key part is the i3 cpu? I guess what I am asking is, is that the best/fastest cpu choice for my setup? So then I am choosing a motherboard and fan to accompany that..correct? I researched just buying a whole new pc, but they all seem to compare to my same processor speed. Do those other motherboards also maybe require the updated BIOS?

I spent 6+ hours researching all this, using those 2 sites you gave (pcpart and cpu.user). I understand what you are suggesting now with the cpu and motherboard and how there are so many choices. I tried for hours to find what I need and could not..there are just so many choices. So I figured that I can give you a list of my components and what I would need on the motherboard, and you can point me in the right direction, like you already have been doing...but just narrow it down for me more. The parts you gave are great, but I think I would like to spend a little more and get more newer models and more speed from the cpu.

Every couple of years, I find myself trying to upgrade. So I guess I am hoping for something newer for the cpu and mobo. This is in response to the discussion about me using older "architecture."

After looking at the differences between the i3 and i5's, I understand how they overlap a bit. So specifically, I would like something more along the lines of the i5 for speed comparison (faster than the higher i3's but not over $200). We have a website and it takes forever to upload photos and make changes, so I want this to be fast.

I don't need much if any onboard graphics since I have the GTX, I just bought above.

I would like the motherboard to be able to use all the above and have atleast 1 regular usb (could be 3.0 too and 1 usb 3.0 in the front) I also need some usb's in the back. We use the front ones a lot and I have 2 slots up there. We also use the sd card reader in the front of the tower A LOT. I would like to use Asrock, as you mentioned, since I am worried about updating BIOS, and it seems they have made it simple.

I need an ethernet port too since we use that for our internet connection.

I understand I would need a new power supply, mobo, and cpu.

The main problem I had, was when I picked a cpu on pcpartpicker, I could not find the mobo to go with it that had the ports and things I needed. And I got a bit boggled by all the choices. And since my pc is slow, it was taking a long time to copy and paste each mobo choice in a new window to research it.

Lastly, it is very important that all is quiet as possible. I sit next to the tower for hours and would like it psu and any cpu cooler fans to be quiet.

That all being said, I don't have an endless budget, but I will spend what I need to, to get a quiet, fast pc.

reuse of RAM limits to 4th gen intel. 6th gen requires ddr4, the speed differences between 4th and 6th gen is minimal, compared to your cpu and an i3, very minimal. you can get the i3 now and later add an i7 if you wish or an i5. just so you know:
an i3 is half an i7, 2 cores with hyperthreading 4 threads total
an i7 is 4 cores with hyperthreading 8 threads total
an i5 is an i7 with no hyperthreading 4 cores 4 threads total
the i3 running slower and drawing less power will naturally be quiet, more heat equals more fan noise.

the motherboard I linked to has regular and 3.0 usb ports, a network port.
the front USB ports on your case will not support USB 3.0, it has 2 ports on rear but the case will not allow 3.0 on the front.the 3.0 front panel connector has 20 pins vs the standard 10 for earlier USB.
I updated the motherboard to one that for sure will not need flashing. one with the i3 and one with the i5, the performance difference is @15% faster for the i5 but is nearly 30% more expensive

THANKS! OK..one thing, my tower does have a usb 3.0 on the front..it is labeled as such. I was hoping to use this with 3.0 flash drives for my photos and home videos.

I bought everything and now have a question about the actual install. Do I start a new thread? Or do I ask here? Sorry if I mess this up..

My Pc came prebuilt with windows 8.1. When I change the mobo (Asrock H97m) and cpu (i5-4460) and add the 2 more ram cards, will my windows 8.1 still work? I guess what I am asking is...do I just unscrew/unplug everything and rescrew/replug in the new stuff, and turn the pc on, will everything just start? Or am I supposed to make special disks or something? (Sorry..I tried reading up on this, but there are tons of different answers.)

Backup what you need.
download ISO from MS so you can re-install windows
install windows and restore files from backup.
