I'm planning to 2-way sli 980s in the future and overclock them aswell. is this viable?
should I upgrade my psu now or down the line? or should I buy the next line of cards later and get a single card? what would be the most viable option to receive a boost in performance?
Thinking about gaming in 1080p for now then overclock and upgrade for 1440p

When is up to you. However, if you do it now, you will not need to spend more money later when you buy the second 980.

From looking at your parts list, you already have a very good 750 watt power supply selected. I am wondering if you might not be better off with an 850 watt unit because power supplies operate most efficiently when at 40% to 65% loads, and I suspect you might get a bit above that with a pair of 980's and a good overclock.

One other change I would suggest. Take a look at this chart from a storage company with over 40,000 hard drives online. This chart is their failure rates as of September 2014...

I think that is pretty self explainatory.

The power supply can handle 980s sli but overclocking might be cutting it close. I don't think gtx 980 is a good buy from a performance per dollar standpoint let alone two. @1440p, I would recommend the 980ti instead since sli 980 would only be 10-15% faster but will cost $350 more.
