Hi guys,

With the new generation of games coming out, I was hoping someone would be able to help me with an upgrade question.

The 780 Ti I'm running seems to be fine, it chews through just about anything.

the CPU however, I'm not sure if these new gen games are going to utilise more cores or not. I've currently got an AMD 6350, which is 24/7 overclocked to 4.5GHz (no overvolts or watercooling) and it does well on the games that actually use multiple cores (looking at you Skyrim)

I was looking to upgrade to an 8350 for the upcoming Fallout 4 title (want to run that baby at 60fps 1080p) but I'd like to know if any of you think it's worth it or if I should just stick with my current CPU at it's current (overclocked) speeds and just upgrade my GPU when the time comes?

CPU - AMD FX-6350 Six Core CPU
CPU Cooler - Super Quiet 22dBA Triple Copper Heatpipe AMD CPU Cooler
Motherboard - ASUS® SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0
RAM - 16GB KINGSTON HYPER-X FURY DDR3 1600MHz (2x 8GB sticks)
GPU - 3GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 780 Ti
PSU - CORSAIR 650W CS SERIES (gold plus)

Thanks guys!

I would advise a wait and see. An 8350 isn't a huge upgrade though it's nice to see you already have the motherboard for it. Two extra cores are not going to make up for the architecture's short comings (such as age) nor the chipset's (age being one of them as well). This would be similar from going from and 4690K to a 4790K. An upgrade for sure but for most people it will be a marginal upgrade.

Yeah "wait and see" makes sense.

It's a shame there isn't much of an upgrade path from the later FX series - thankfully they can be monstrously overclocked I suppose.

If the situation arises where playing some games are difficult (which will royally annoy me considering the graphics card and OC on the CPU are pretty decent) - would you say it's better to just hop over to intel? Can't see AMD bringing anything new to the socket my motherboard supports

Would be pointless when you're running that current CPU at 4.5ghz mate - I would imagine that's performing fairly well with the 780ti?

I'm running a 6300@4.3 with a 970 & can't really fault performance so our systems are pretty similar.

60fps ultra isn't a struggle to either of us & I don't see it massively changing personally.
The fact is those 2 extra cores on a 8350 make little difference in gaming & you're not 100% guaranteed to hit 4.5ghz on an 8 core - I've seen a fair few top out at 4.3ghz without pushing stupid voltages through them.

Yeah I thought it might be - I reckon I'll just hold out for now then, our systems should be capable of running anything thrown at it for another few years!

Worst comes to worst, I'll stick another 780 Ti in to tide me over for another cycle, here's hoping Fallout 4 isn't as unoptimised as the previous games were hah!

Sorry to double post but this thread is a little more relevant now.
