just looking for some advice.

I am long due for an upgrade and I may have some cash available... thinking about 2 tracks
Use - VFX, Unreal Engine, compositing, 4K editing ...Mostly FX and animation with a little music production

current build
asus z10pe-d16 - https://www.asus.com/us/commercial-servers-workstations/z10ped16/
dual E5-2640 2.8 (3.2 turbo) Xeon processors
64gb DDR 2400 memory
dual GTX 1080 GPUs

First path
replace the video card with 1 RTX 4080, (I know I amy get bottleneck criticism here but ive done research and even in raytraced scenarios the 40 series will only drop about 5% performance with pci-E 3)
And upgrade the current box as much as possible
used E5-2643 3.3-3.5 ghz CPUs which I can get both for about a hundred bucks
I can also max out my ram for pretty cheap which the motherboard will take almost a TB

plan 2
just bite the bullet and push for a fill upgrade
new mobo, Ram ...etc.
which will easily be another 2k or more....Looking at least a 5k+build with everything new. I think I can reuse my case and power supply and probably some of My noctua fans

Thoughts?

Im a bit stuck...as my current setup isn't quite working for what I want to do especially in Unreal cinema production and RT cores missing is a thorn.

But...I feel like I can get a lot better setup with a half upgrade for a lot less as doing a full build would be pushing a few months

This gives you a rough idea of what you can do as far as a new build goes.

Yeah thats real close to what I already have planned out. but it will be a while before I can afford what I need. The motherboard needs to take ECC for large data sets so a workstation board alone will be 500-1k

which is why im contemplating just filling out the workstation I have instead I can get better processors which were 1k+ a piece when I built this are now a couple undred bucks used.....

thats my dilemma...spend 2k now and get something slightly better or buy piece by piece and get a full replacement in january

You don't want to run that cpu on air. Look at the locked version of that cpu i9 13900 and a 360 AIO.

Yeah ok its been a minute did some follow up reseearch and especially that 13900 k seems anything over 200w should really have an AIO

good call thanks for the tip

what are your thoughts on the AMD 7950X? ive never run AMD before but for 3D applications the benchmarks seem to favor it

7950x3D is also an amazing CPU... with even lower thermals... and you can cool it with the Noctua... I do. :)

That machine you have is kind of an option im looking at...
maybe you can answer a question for me...if the highend processors only support 128gb of ram, how come that motherboard you have supports up to 192gb?

No idea... but 64GB is plenty for everyday use. You may even call it overkill. I can be gaming with videos playing in the background with 25 Firefox tabs open and not even use half my ram.

I need more ram than that, I do some 3D scenes that will easily try to push past the 64gb cieling, I have 64gb now and I have issues with fluid simulations. I used to have 128gb and one module went bad and I have to run the dual procs in parity.

You'll have to research it or wait for someone else to chime in... massive amounts of ram isn't my expertise because 64GB is plenty for the gaming and video editing/encoding that I do. :)

Before you do, just know that pairing two 2x32 gb kits of RAM can cause issues for multiple reasons.

On the ASUS website for memory compatibility for that particular motherboard, only these four kits of Kingston RAM are on the QVL list for a 4x32gb kit:
KF552C40BWK4-128
KF552C40BBK4-128
KF552C40BWAK4-128
KF552C40BBAK4-128

Yeah... forgot to mention this OP.

2 ram sticks are your best option... have seen many instability reports when populating all 4 slots.

Thanks for the heads up, I like kingston so thats not a real issue for me. I also saw a bunch of chatter about issues with asus and AM5 altogether so I may go with a gigabyte board
