Hi, I built my first system many many years ago for basic photo and music editing and more recently decided to play some old games on it. Since the original build I've replaced the HDD to SSD, added some extra ram and changed my 1gb GPU to a 4gb.
I'm just wondering what inshould look at next as a cheap ish upgrade. I'm not looking at running the latest game titles and silly FPS but just something that can plod on with a few older easier games comfortably.
This is my list

Thanks

Hi Mags0616.

I think the next step for you would be to switch to a new board, CPU and RAM.

That FX-6300 is now 9 years old and performance wise you're losing a lot there.

A Ryzen 3600 would already be a big upgrade from that FX-6300.

Are you up to switching to a new platform?

Even a 6 cores 12 Threads Intel cheaper than a Ryzen 3600 would do the job.

To be honest I wouldn't know where to start. This was my first time building something and my knowledge isn't the best anymore. I feel as if I would just be starting from scratch if I did that and buying everything new which atm I don't really have the money for. I had to pick up the GPU dirt cheap and considering even something like an old Fx-8320 CPU for a minor upgrade.

I did build this about 10 years ago and it served me well but I'm dirt poor atm and with my xbox back at microsoft being repaired I need something to play...

Wow thank you, I think I need a small lottery win and then someone to hold my hand as I wouldn't know where to start. To be honest when I built this and got it working I was amazed I hadn't blown it up building it.
Is it very much just swap everything out, plug SSD back in and let it do its magic sorting itself out? I know I'd have to sort out drivers etc.
Guessing my power supply choice was OK back in the day then lol..

Since the platform that you are running is dead, you would have to look at upgrading your CPU/Motherboard/RAM. Going to even a Ryzen 2600 will basically double your CPU performance and going to a 5600X will be tripling or more what you currently have.
Thanks, appreciate the recommendations, im so out of the loop

With the price of the 10400f, it's hard to ignore it. An 11400f would be a bit better, and give you PCI-E gen 4 capability, allowing the usage of the top NVME slot.

Anything modern, would be a vast improvement, over an FX 6300. What is your budget? I also recommend a new CPU, MB, and ram to start, along with a new, and better quality, PSU.
I think I have about £4.80 in my wallet and a McDonald's coffee card.....

Generally though should I just consider gutting the PC, keep the SSD, case and GPU and start again?

Just swap it out. Easy peasy.
