So I have a 7700k ,32gbs of 3ghz ram and a gtx1080. Given the cost of graphics cards sky rocketing and availability being crap is there any real options for a cpu upgrade that would actually increase performance for a rational cost or would I just waste money only to end up with a bottleneck. I'm looking of this as a bridge to hold me over til sanity returns to the diy market

Solution
7700k @ 5Ghz - delidded, water cooled (but not liquid metal)
GTX1080 @ 2100Mhz
2x8GB DDR4 3000Mhz
1440p 144hz

Most of the games I play run fine. Cyberpunk 2077 the latest poster child for excessive requirements, claims a 60FPS at medium settings. A few compromises here and there and 100+ FPS is not a problem for most other games.

I'm either going to hold out for DDR5/PCIe 5.0 or maybe pick up the last revision of the Ryzen 5000 series, and try to snag a RTX 30 series when the miners are done with them, Might just hold out until next gen as well. Kind of want to see what Intel brings to the field.

I also have it in my mind to try my hand at BIOS hacking and pick up a 9700k to drop in to my Z270 board. But that has a lot of risks...
Are you looking for a "drop-in" replacement on your existing mobo? If so, then no, you're maxed out.

If you have the funds, buying a new CPU (AMD or Intel) would also require a new mobo.

My recommendation: If you're not severely CPU-limited right now (check your GPU usage % in game), then hold off till late 2021 or early 2022 when AMD and Intel release their DDR5 systems.

(assuming we're talking about gaming)
What resolution do you play at?
What games?

The 7700k is still a decent CPU. At 1080p you'll probably get a few FPS in some games, in some scenarios. But this will vary, game by game. It's not really worth it to upgrade anything now.

Yea I'm running msi m7 z270 gaming with the 7700k so I figured 8700k 9700k or 9900k with a z390 if I did anything at all but at 800-2500 for a gpu I'll wait for the 4080 to come out before I change cards
