*AMD R9 280
*1TB WD HDD

Looking at upgrading the system with;

*Intel i7-4790k
*ROG STRIX GTX 1070 Ti 8GB
*2x8GB DDR3 2400MHz Corsair Vengence Pro
*Kingston A400 240GB SSD

Firstly is this a worthwhile upgrade, im planning to use this computer for mostly gaming and as a media centre to run alongside my pc.

Secondly can my existing motherboard take it its a *Gigabyte Z97-HD3*

Those prices sound pretty viable. The GPU I'm not too concerned about, more the platform itself.

For ~240quid (approx), you have to way up the alternatives.
For example, for strictly gaming:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i5-8400 2.8GHz 6-Core Processor (£155.45 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: MSI - B360M PRO-VD Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard (£59.98 @ Ebuyer)
Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory (£114.35 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £329.78

Solid 6c/6t, modern platform, DDR4 etc...
What PSU do you have?

The motherboard can accommodate the CPU, GPU and RAM upgrade.

How much is this upgrade looking like it'll cost? CPU/RAM mostly. Whether it's the best use of funds will depend on the cost - used 4790K's are still going for some good money - whereas you might want to consider something like an i5-8400, B360 board & DDR4 memory (again, depending on cost).

Majority of parts looking at used on ebay;

4790K looking at £180 Buy it Nows with a few Auctions going cheaper
ROG STRIX 1070 Ti looking at £240 Used
Vengence Pro 16GB looking at £50/60
Kingston SSD @ £40 New

Solid 6c/6t, modern platform, DDR4 etc. You'd then be in a position to sell your i5, MB & RAM as a combo.

You're right on the cusp of what's viable investing in the older platform IMO.
