Question Upgrade to a 4080 super now OR wait for 5080 OR wait for 5080 to release so 4080 S price to drop?

My current setup is a Ryzen 7 5700X3D, and an RX 6800 XT. It performs well in gaming with my 1440p monitor (Except for Wukong and MH Wilds...) and i have an 850w gold psu with 12V-2x6 connectors.

6800 xt is still holding up in 2024 but it's nothing crazy, and to make matters worse for my card, i will start taking multimedia arts course next year. So heavy video editing and 3d modelling will take place there for sure, and i'm also interested in superior RT performance and better recording/streaming quality.

I could easily sell my 6800 xt for $420 in my country, add up the earned extra money i got from months of allowance and selling my previous PC components to get a 4080 super now ($1026 here). But is it worth waiting for 5080? It's being released in January 2025, which is just 2 months from now, making 4080 S slightly less appealing.

But my problem with 5080 right now is that im not sure what the price will be on launch. If it's gonna be $1000, sure great deal, i'll get it but probably unlikely because nvidia, but if it's $1200, that's a no-no for me since i only get my money from monthly allowance ($65 per month 💀). And add the nonsense of resellers/scalpers buying most or all of the 5080 stock at launch and now i have to wait a couple more months for a reasonable price.

Or should i wait for 4080 S prices to drop slightly so save a bit more money when the 5080 drops? What do you guys think?

I suggest you wait for 5080. If the recent past is any indication of the future, then Nvidia will be making DLSS 4 exclusive to the RTX-50 series, and it’s a feature far too useful to be without.

If you wait until next summer all your questions will be answered.

This has become almost unpredictable. They seem to constantly increase the MSRP and then it takes months to even buy one at that high price. Then if you are lucky they might finally drop under MSRP.

Unless you are considering buy used video cards older models seem to keep their pricing. The manufactures are very good at reducing the supply of the older cards when the new one are coming out. The problem is they want to use the equipment to make the new cards which they make more profit so they stop making the old cards. The supply of new in the box old model cards is reduced and you just get a different variation of the scalper issue.
