I currently have the rig in my sig. I am still debating over grabbing a used 980/990x and OC to 4.0-4.2 or going all new and getting a Z97 rig. Which means new mobo, cpu and ram eventually. I can sell my mobo for @100-125 according to prior eBay sales. The 950 isn't worth much npr is the ram.

So should I spend the money and just go z97 or grab a used 980/990 and keep my x58 a few more years? I mainly use my rig for gaming which I don't get to play as often as I would like. Also, I do plan on grabbing another 780 for sli eventually.

I'm only doing this all because that's what I usually do when I'm bored in the winter. Upgrade the pc. Lol

Solution
Stay with the 950, a 980 wouldn't be much of an improvement. Nehalem I7's are about on ivy/haswell I5 level, so you're still absolutely fine. But once you feel the urge to upgrade, go with new cpu and mobo.

Thanks for the responses. Maybe I will keep the 950 a bit longer.

My biggest concern going with a z97 is I can't seem to find the perfect motherboard. There are so many different types it is overwhelming. Some can run SLI with the newer m.2 drives or sata express some can't. Some the audio is excellent some it isn't. Some have Killer networking and some have Intel.

When I built my X58 rig I don't remember there being so many variables.

I decided to get a i7 4790k and a Gigabyte Z97X UDH5. I couldn't resist the deal yesterday. I paid $289.99 for the 4790k but I already sold the World of Tanks game code that came with it on ebay for $35. I also was able to use the $25 visa checkout code on the UDH5, $149.99-$20 rebate, because I bought an external HDD I needed anyways to go over $200. So I got the 4790k and UDH5 for @$365 after the $20 rebate on the UDH5 and ebay/paypal fees. Not to bad!
