I have an old amd based build on "amd fx6100" and a "Sapphire Radeon r9 290 4gb tri x oc" and I would like to upgrade to amd's new ryzen 1600x. As for the gpu I was thinking a gtx 1070, but is that a worthwhile upgrade from my r9 290? Should I go with a gpu from amd instead? Should I keep my old gpu? Please! All feedback needed

You basically answered it yourself :)

Even if you dont plan on overclocking, the 1600 is still better value for your money, but you cant go wrong buying a 1600x so no stress there.

Like I said your r9 290 should still serve you well for some time if you wish to hold on to it, however there will be a substantial increase in performance going with a newer generation card like the 1070 or upcoming Vega.

If Vega performs good compared to competition, grab one, otherwise just grab a 1070, it will be a worthwile upgrade, easily about 40 fps gain in most games over the r9 290.
Its a big yes to upgrade to the new ryzen 5, though id recommend getting the 1600 instead of the 1600x since you could overclock it to the performance of the 1600x! (Oh and its cheaper AND you get a decent cooler too, making it much better value)

For the graphics card though, if you have the budget and if your impatient, the gtx 1070 is a worthwhile upgrade over the r9 290. Although if you for say dont have all the money yet/are willing to wait, AMD Vega will be releasing soon and you might get more for your money then.

In short, you cant go wrong with that path of upgrade, but if youre patient wait a bit for vega.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: if however you dont have the budget for a new gpu, your current one is still very capable if you wish to keep it for a bit longer :)

Thanks for answer "ThatAfricanDude"
Well I kinda want to wait for the Vega, not because of budget, but because amd don't really have anything on the gtx 1070 or 1080. Problem is I don't know how much better a 1070 would be, compared to my r9 290. Plus I've yet to see what the Vega has to offer.
As for the cpu I'm not too smart when it comes to overclock lol. Plus I hear the 1600x can somehow overclock itself...

Last time I overclocked something was the old pentium 4 back in 2009 lol. I remember I got it from 3ghz to 4.6ghz with decent Temps lol, but somehow I can't oc my FX

Again thanks for the answer. Really appreciated. I think I'll go with the advice you gave me. I'll stick with my old gpu for now, and wait for Vega, then I'm gonna see if the Vega is something for me or not, when there is some actual benchmarks out there. As for the cpu I'll think a little bit about it. Since the price is nearly the same, but then if I buy the 1600x, I will still need some extra money for the cooler. Do u have the 1600 yourself?

Exactly, the extra bit for the cooler just adds to the pricetag.
Glad i could help you out, goodluck.

I dont have a 1600, though im picking up the 4 core 1500x soon (tight budget) but if youre interested, i think "hardware unboxed" made a video about why the 1600 is the better choice too, he will be better at explaining it than me :)
