upgrade to a i7 6700, i5 7600k or get a i5 8400

hey everyone, i currently have a g4560 with the asrock b250m hdv motherboard with 8gb ddr4 2133mhz,
im thinking of either staying with my current mobo and get the i7 6700 or i5 7600k
or selling the mobo and cpu and getting a coffee lake compatible mobo and the i5 8400,
it will be used for gaming and recording/streaming and light video editing/photoshop

what would you recommend i get
my gpu is a gtx 970
i have a 1080p 60hz monitor

Depends on the prices, impossible to help you without them. Comment the prices of the 6700, 7700, and 8400 + mobo. You can't overclock the K processors and buying a whole new motherboard could be a really bad performance per dollar spent proposition. Even though you don't necessarily need it make sure you update the BIOS if there's a new one available before popping any new CPUs in, this is a good time to update.

The i7 6700 is £120, the i5 7600 is £105 and the i5 8400 is £115 plus around £50 to £60 for the motherboard
I have already updated my bios to the latest version as it supports both 6th and 7th gen IL be fine on my current one unless I go coffee lake

Ehhhhhh that's pretty close. I'd probably get a 6700 and spend the extra few bucks on another 8GB of RAM. Your choice though. 7600 is 100% not worth it at that price.

Yeah ok thanks, il get the i7 then, and get another 8gb ram, I also need to get a ssd or m.2 as I only have a 1tb hard drive, and get another harddrive for recordings etc

The 8400 and new MB will cost only about what a 7700K costs (7700K is $65 more than 6700), while a 6700K is $50 more expensive (at today's Amazon listings) than a 7700K, oddly enough....

The i5-8400 plus a B360 deserves serious consideration, IMO......keeps up with 7700K (which is clocked a full 500/800 MHz higher than a 6700 for turbo/base clock speeds, respectively) at $100 less total

The i7-6700 is $275....; not peanuts, in light of the i5-8400's cost of only $205...

Both will max out a GT970, but, the 8400 will have headroom for a GPU upgrade later..... (GTX1160 is coming!)
