I currently am building a new i7 8700k system just waiting for CPU to be in stock.

I7 8700k
MSI z370 gaming pro carbon
16gb 3000mhz ddr4 ram
Evga 850 GQ watt psu
MSI gtx 1080

I currently have a 4k 60fps monitor but I was wondering if it's worth it to get a new monitor 144hz and 2k resolution which brand is best etc.

Solution
In my opinion, the 1080 is not really a 4k card. It is a very good GPU, but it wont push 60fps at max settings in games. I would look for a 1440p high refresh rate monitor. The 1080/8700k is the perfect card for those monitors.

I will have to echo WildCard999's advice and strongly recommend a 3440x1440p panel. You can get the best of both worlds with 75-120hz refresh and 2.5k resolution. Plus the added horizontal real estate makes gaming amazing. Some of the higher end panels can get pricey, but they have come down considerably over the past year.

Here is a decent price on a high end 34" widescreen that will serve you well for the next decade.

4k 60Hz vs 1440p 144/165Hz?
Well, it depends on the game type you play more.
For RPGs or anything like that, I would rather keep the 4k 60Hz.
For shooting games or racing games, if you play seriously, I would grab the fastest monitor a.k.a. 1440p 144/165Hz.

If you do decide to go for 1440p 144/165hz, I would go for any 1440p 144/165Hz IPS monitor with GSync (because of your nVIdia GPU) you can find e.g. ASUS PG279Q, ACER XB271HU, etc.

About your processor, wait for the I7 9xxx or if you need a PC immediately, grab Ryzen 5 2600 or 7 2700. Forget about I7 8700k with it's current price.

A gtx1080 is only so-so with a 4k/60Hz monitor. There'll be more than a few AAA titles that'll require lowered detail settings just to get decent fps, meaning don't expect BF1 at ultra settings to get 60fps. Moving upto a new 4k/144Hz isn't going to change that, unless the majority of games are simpler graphically, like the Sims or Skyrim etc.

As said, for a gtx1080, if you are looking to increase fps, drop to a 1440p/144Hz. That'll be an upgrade as far as first person shooters, fast paced games like BF1 or GtaV etc, but not picture quality difference between 4k and 1440p.

In order to make good use out of 4k/144Hz you'd need a RTX2080ti.

No one is selling I7 8700k with that price, of course it is not available.
You can find available I7 8700k only over £400.
If you wanna wait, you might as well wait for the coming I7 9xxx.

Also, you don't need an 850 watt PSU for that system. A quality 550 - 650watt PSU will push that rig just fine.

I just got the CPU today so I will be using a Corsair h115i pro

I wish they had that panel in IPS instead of VA.
