So here's the deal, I currently run an i7-4790k in a mini-itx board i got from a friend for free. As of late I've noticed that the 4 Sata III ports just weren't enough for the hardware I was wanting to run. So I looked around and I've noticed that Z97 boards are getting few and far between, so I looked around and I've noticed some new motherboards out there that run the X99 and Z170 chipsets. I started thinking that it may be better to save my current motherboard and Devils Canyon CPU for use in a different pc that I could later sell or give as a gift or whatever, and invest in one of these new boards and CPUs. My question is, do any of these newer CPUs, such as the i7-5930k or the i7-6850k paired with a X99 mobo, or anything with something like an i7-6700k be enough of an improvement to justify the transition, or am i better off just buying what suits my needs for the moment and upgrading in a year or two? I'm not overly worried about saving every penny, as I am interested in the advantages that come with a new board such as M.2 and USB 3.1 as well as built in wireless, not just on pure performance.
I do game fairly heavily with modded Fallout, Battlefront, and many of the other new titles. I also use some CAD and imaging software for school, such as SolidWorks. Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
