upgrade to i7

hello.. currently i have a i5 3230m cpu in my laptop. now i am looking to upgrade it to either i7 3632qm (quad core) or i7 3540m (dual core). i notice between the 2 cpus the dual core has a higher base of 3GHz and 3.7GHz turbo speed compare to the quad at 2.2GHz base and 3.2GHz turbo speed. so i would like to know which i should go for and why? i'm not really wanting to currently buy a whole new laptop at present. thanks for any help

The quad core. More cores means better performance in the case of many simultaneously running applications that all actively use the CPU , or in applications that are made to use many cores (modern games sometimes require 3 or more cores).

Seconded. Laptop parts are usually soldered onto the board making upgrading impossible, thereby forcing one to buy a whole 'nother pc for upgrades. 'Tis one of the downsides of using laptops.

the laptop has a 988 G2 socket. i did upgrade it from i3 to i5, but not wanting to buy a new laptop so the 2 cpus are my choices. looking for input on which is better

If the quad core CPU is compatible with your motherboard then go for quad core.
