Trying to confirm all is compatible and best performance for money and reuse the above listed parts.

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: No

Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080 Current

Additional Comments: I really like the system I have. I am a retired engineer with a company setup where I have numerous other retired engineers where we have the pleasure of working together on projects we like. I have two matched systems where occasionally we manage a construction project and I can have one in a construction trailer. These systems have two extra hot swap Sata drives so I can carry files back and forth easily.

Current System: Gateway FX 6860 UR20P, Intel I7-2600 Sandy Bridge 3.40 GHz CPU, Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD, 32GB PC3-12800 G.Skill Ram, Windows 10 Pro.

Why Upgrade: My current system works well. I have been considering upgrading, but have not taken action. Yesterday, I think the motherboard failed.

Upgrade Current Case, etc.: I want to do a new build in my current case and reuse the following parts:
Gateway FX-6860 tower case
FSB Group 500 Watt Power Supply
AMD Radeon Pro WX-7100 8 GB Video Card
Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD
Current Windows 10 Professional purchased last year
Four Front Mounted USB Sockets USB 2.0 sockets (maybe upgrade)
2 Front bays, 3.5" easy-swap Sata Hard Drive bays
5 Front Mounted SD Card slots
ATAPIDVD/CD Recorder DH16ABSH
Case Fan
Case Lighting
LogitechMK710 wireless keyboard and mouse

Any Advice appreciated. Specific Questions:
  • I have struggled to determine the motherboard, but it is square just over 9.5 inches each way, so I believe it is a Micro ATX (MATX). This new motherboard looks like it matches, but how do I confirm the back panel is the correct size?
  • How do I choose best ram for the money?
  • For 32GB ram, is it ok to use 2 16GB and have room to add two more later? I have always used all four slots

Solution
Thank you. I was trying to figure out if there was a low profile memory brand. Someone else had suggested this memory also, but I didn't understand it was a low profile. It was a brand that I was not familiar with, so I was not sure if it would perform as well. Still, I am also not sure if the Noctua cooler has enough room to clear the memory without raising. Also, not confident I know how to adjust the cooler to miss the memory.

This helps, thank you.

edit:
didnt notice your specific questions :p
  • it is micro ATX
  • ram size, vs ram speed/latency vs price
  • 2x16GB is no issue, but if you plan to fill 2 more slots later, you can run into compatibility issues, in that case is preferable to sell old 2x16GB stick and buy 4x16GB sticks (or 4x32GB), not every quad sticks will run with your mainboard, see mainboard support page - memory compatibility list, that will tells you which will run

btw what PSU model number you have?

As a novice, struggling to figure out these issues and was already doubting fan. There is so much available, it is a real task to figure out best choices. That is why I asked experienced people to look. Good advice, I will switch to that fan. I still need to make sure I have enough room. Thank you.

You asked what PSU model; FSP450-60EP. Tried to add photo, but I don't see a way to do that.

I was not aware of partpickercom, does it have the ability to confirm compatibility of parts?

I like the case you suggested. I had assumed I could not find a case with hot swap bays and the SD card slots. Also, this case can accept a full size ATX motherboard, which I assume would allow more upgrades and attachment of hard drives, and other things. I tend to have a lot of add-ons.

PCPP gives you a general idea but its always better to do your own research before purchasing.

I would get a better PSU too...

Thank you, I will look at power supplies. I figured if it failed later I could replace then. I don't know anything about failing power supplies, but maybe they damage other parts when they go. I looked that the suggested power supply and it ranges from $60 to $100. If I can get it at around $60, then it is a no brainer.

That 10850k will draw somewhere around 250w at peak from the wall...

Combined with the other parts, that FSP you have might struggle. It sounds pretty old anyway. You will need more wattage for headroom. Here is a PSU reference chart...

I appreciate all the help that has come in. Given the comments, I have put together my preferred list so far. I already have the video card and a similar SSD, so I think I can build this for around $1000. I want to get this build before year end. I will spend the next couple months watching for better ideas here, looking at new products and try to find a few sales along the way. Here is the list I have settled on so far with the prices as shown in pcpartpicker.com:

Most of this looks pretty good. I am continuing to research and try to determine the best option on a few issues.
  1. I want 32GB ram, and have had good experience with G.Skill which seems to be a good quality brand. Other than finding a good sale, not sure which ram is best. The chip supports 2933 and I have picked a number close to that. From what I have heard, if I choose a 3000 or 3200 chip, it will run at the 2933 but will not hurt anything. Also, it appears that 2x16 will be better than 4x8 chips to put less strain on CPU.
  2. I focused on ASUS PRIME Z590-A ATX because it seems to be a good board, and has plenty of room to add stuff in future. I tend to have 4 to 6 hard drives, so this seems good. One suggestion was for Gigabyte motherboard and that seems like a good brand. I am still trying to compare, but it looks like either of these brands work well.
  3. I had to upgrade to new case because I understand this CPU needs a cooler that will not fit in my current case. I am still trying to research these, but have thus far chosen the Noctua NH 82.52 CFM Cooler.

Again, great suggestions from everyone. Again, I am novice at this, so if you see flaws in my thought process or have suggestions, please let me know. I am leaving the thread open a little while to accept comments, but before long will pick a trophy and move on. Thank you very much.

Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black 82.52 CFM CPU Cooler
Cooler Master MasterBox NR600P ATX Mid Tower Case
G.Skill Ripjaws V 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3000 CL16 Memory

NH-D15 is 165mm tall in the default position, with ram clearance for up to 31mm tall modules.[The official specs say 32mm, but it's not advised to have the fan and ram touch, so leave a 1mm gap for spacing.]
NR600P has a max clearance of 171mm.
Ripjaws V is 45mm tall.
The front fan of the D15 will need to be raised 15mm, for a total height of 180mm. Obviously, that won't fit in the NR600P, so something needs to change:
Mount both fans behind their respective towers, or change one of the parts, so that they fit.

Thanks. I had actually looked at that case but would have to give up the hot swap hard drive bays. Also, I am not confident that I could successfully raise the cooler to clear the ram anyway. I like the efficiency of that cooler, but for now, I have been searching for another good cooler. I need to be sure the Intel i9-10850 maintains a safe temperature.
Again, thanks.

From 10850k to 11400 is a massive downgrade. For the 11400, you wont need such a beefy cooler as the Noctua as it is a locked CPU with a much lower TDP. Since none of your mentioned workloads have massive scaling requirements a 6 core might be sufficient atm. But note that it wont last as long as a 10 core.
RAM is usually a standard component with any manufacturer you go, specially on the Intel platform. With tower coolers, low profile RAM is more convenient to install as you wont need to adjust any fans with it.
You can do with a better PSU.
Since some of your workloads like Photoshop directly benefits from faster clock speeds, I would go for something like this...

Yeah, that FSP is positively ancient, both chronologically and in design. Even if it's the best PSU in the world -- it isn't -- it's realistically only a 360W PSU in modern terms, at most.

This is a very rudimentary, entry-level PSU probably made about 15 years ago for PCs that existed 25 years ago. This isn't a "use until it dies" type of PSU.

This is perfect.
Thank you
