Upgrade to Intel G31 or G41 chipset

Hi All. 1st time Newbie here, but not new to tech. I've upgraded motherboards before and have found, for the most part, reinstalling Win XP with Repair function, not from scratch, usually requires the MoBo chipsets to be the same. In other words, XP won't let you run the reinstall with repair unless both mobo chipsets are, say, VIA, SYS, or Intel. I haven't tried all combinations, yet.
Here's my situation: I'm running a Matsonic S478, Intel 865 chip Mobo. I want to upgrade to S775. I've seen great buys on G31 and G41 mobos and I'm asking if I'll run into the same brick wall as before. And are all G31 and G41 mobos Intel Chipsets?
Any ideas, hints, info, snickers, etc. would be helpful. Thanks.

Yes. The G31 (replaced by the G41) and G41 are Intel chipsets with integrated graphics.

Keeping in mind that these have been replaced by the P55/X58's ...

Although the Gigabyte GA-G41-ES2L (about $65) does not have all the overclocking features of the P45, it is a pretty good overclocker.

It's also 3 generations past the 865 (965, G31, G41), so there's a pretty good chance that you will still need to reinstall Windows.

Also, you missed a couple....865 -> 910/915 -> 945 -> 965 -> G31 -> G41

Wow, yeah if I was going to the trouble of upgrading my motherboard, I would spend just a little more and do alot more than just go from from a very old outdated motherboard to a little newer, but still outdated motherboard. I would at very least do a inexpensive motherboard, processor, memory combo. You can do that for very little money, and be years ahead in performance of where you are now.

Thanks Jitpublisher. Main reason I asked about the G31 motherboard is that I got a good deal on a couple, 1 ECS and 1 Biostar. Money is tight so I can't put in a Core 2 Duo or Quad like I want to. If I got a Celeron D with 512k cache it might suffice as a cheap upgrade. My biggest concern was would I have to install XP from scratch or would the G31 let me do a "repair"? Thanks for your time.

Not really. 910/915 was the "economy" version of the 945 and the 965 was like the bigger brother - same generation.

And while it's true that P55/X58 does not exactly replace G31 or G41, that's only because the P51 with integrated graphics does not exist yet. But it is a newer generation.


Oside, an E5200 ($65) will work nicely in a G41. I built one using the Gigabyte G41 for sis-in-law.
