Upgrade to Single GPU as Crossfire Overheating my PC.....

Hi Everyone,

I am so sorry for so many posts, I am having a few too many hiccups with my Gaming PC and its getting on my nerves a little. I look at it now and think corr Ive built this -- Terrible

Again another problem has occurred with it and I believe my Crossfire set up is causing my PC to hang and freeze on certain games and stuttering is very annoying in Sleeping dogs when driving.

I want to stick in a Single GPU so Temps are kept at a minimum and stuttering is gone :).

I was thinking of upgrading from Crossfire 6870 to a Ati 7950?

is this considered as a good upgrade from the Crossfire or could you recommend a better GPU? I do have a budget of roughly £200 - £250 so anything better then the 7950 and between that price range fantastic.

I did look at the 7970 but £300+ is quite a lot for only a few extra frames. (Some reviews I have seen).

I also am fed up with my Corsair GS800W PSU as the cables are so annoying, I was thinking of buying the OCZ ZX Series 850W 80+ version as you plug in the cables you need so much nicer and neater.

Thanks for reading this post, I will be upgrading my Asrock Pro3 Mobo to something a little more better so if you can assist with that also amazing!!! 😀.

If your Crossfire configuration is causing stuttering that is truly taking away from your gaming experience, even a downgrade to a single 6870 would be an improvement. If you are playing on one 1080p monitor a 7950 will be more than enough.

Do you think I should get the BOOST version or not?

I was looking around a lot and I couldn't find the Boost version on Ebuyer?

Also as well AMD site states their are two versions of GPU's normal and GHZ version and I still couldn't find those versions on the sites, could anyone help with that.

Well in that case, even a 7870 would be way more than enough.

Hi, the reason you are experiencing the hangs, freezes and stuttering is because AMD has an issue with crossfire framerate times. This issue will be fixed with a new driver update that will be released on the 31st of this month.

So if you can hang on till then the issues you have will be solved by that new driver.

Otherwise a HD7950 is your best upgrade option if you really want to upgrade. As for the version... just get the one you think looks best - a few extra MHz won't make that much of a difference and then you can also just overclock a card by yourself...

If you have good airflow in your case get one with an open custom cooler, otherwise get the reference blower fan design. An open cooler will keep the card cooler but will exhaust a lot of the warm air inside your case, a reference blower fan design cooler will exhaust all of the warm air outside of your case but the card will run warmer and potentially louder.

Because you don't need that much of a card if that's your monitor resolution :). I will recommend the 650 Ti Boost instead. It will be a good upgrade from the 'stuttering 6870 CF'. You can sell those 2 cards instead.

Although if you have an option to upgrade your monitor to a 1920x1080p or something else bigger than what you have now, The 760 or the 7950 will be a great option.
