Upgrade to what?

Asus P8z68v pro
Gtx970
8gb ram
1tb hdd
250gb ssd (for os)

Newer games obviously stressing the i5 whats my best value upgrade route going to be i would want ultra settings 1080p all games with vr an 4k capabilities. Id assume the 970 was good enough to keep for a while?? Small form factor would be nice but ability and price are primary. Any ideas are appreciated.

Upgrade CPU + Motherboard + RAM but wait for AMD Zen to release first. They might be releasing decent CPU's for the price in Q1 2017.

GPU looks decent enough, but It's a bit below mid-end nowadays.

Jumping from 2500 to 4970 or 6600 / 6700 will yield 15-30% performance increase + big boost depending which GPU you will get along with it.
At this point you need to find the cheapest route.

So you can get better GPU like gtx 1070 or you can change your system foundation and replace CPU/ motherboard /RAM which will cost you twice as much.

I think as my gpu still plays most games fine i want to go cpu an mobo next whats the best value/performance for best gaming experience. Which case or mobo for small form? Is it mAtx? And what ram would be best with the set up?

I'd argue that it's a bit more than 'a bit below mid end'
