I am currently running Windows XP and I would like to upgrade to Windows 7. What I need to know is can I use the upgrade version or do I need to purchase the full retail version.

I own a Windows 98 OEM licenses which I upgraded to XP using the upgrade version. Will the Windows 7 upgrade version work on this?

the upgrade will work, but its cheaper to back up your data and get an oem disk. like $7 cheaper but it also avoids many upgrade problems. there are quite a few like the install hanging at 62% or continuous reboots. these problems are avoidable.

i feel its always best to do a clean install.

Can I do a clean install from the Windows 7 upgrade disk? I did that with the Windows XP upgrade disk. It just asked me to put in the Windows 98 disk and product key to verify I had the software. As for purchasing the Windows 7 OEM version, I'd rather not because I swap components (mobos) every couple years and I would rather not risk MS not granting activation.

Yes -- In fact you have to when upgrading fro XP -- it only supports in place upgrades from VISTA so if upgrading from XP you have to select the custom install in Setup.

Here is a good guide published by MS that details the process !

Sounds good. I just wanted to make sure that my Windows XP Upgrade version was able to be upgraded to Windows 7. I wasn't sure if Microsoft had a rule saying that you have to have a Windows XP OEM or Retail version in order to be upgradeable.
