i have a preinstalled windows 8 hp laptop and want to upgrade to windows 8.1. i knows its free and i can upgrade it from windows store.

The upgrade is designed to work. Upgrade the OS to 8.1, and keep all of your current settings and applications. And the vast majority of the time, it works.

I did it, and it worked perfectly.

But if you have an unexpected power shutoff, or bad media, or have a twitchy finger and uncheck the wrong selections in "what to keep"....

You'll wish you had a backup.

For the vast majority, it works. Do you want to risk being part of the tiny minority?

(and you need a backup anyway)

In almost all cases, that will work.
Almost all.

As always with a major change of OS or hardware, back up your critical stuff beforehand, just in case.

first of all thanks for your reply,
the reason i am hesitating to upgrade someone says nothing will be lost and then says you should backup.
and i know backing up is a good thing but i can not backup my installed games and if i lose them i will have to reinstall them and play them all over again. you see the main concern is my installed third party games like grand theft auto or need for speed.
