Hi Everyone,

I am considering upgrading my rig to the x99 platform (new CPU, motherboard, Ram) but I am starting to think that the results would not yield very much improvement over my current situation.

So, would getting a second GPU (another EVGA GTX 980) be a better choice for the short term and perhaps upgrade once skylake comes out?

Current System goes as follows:
Asus z97-a motherboard
Intel I7-4790k cpu
Corsair Vengeance pro 32gb 2400mhz
EVGA GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0 gpu
Intel 530 series 240gb SSD
Samsung 850evo 250gb ssd
EVGA Supernova 850g2 power supply

My thoughts are that adding a second GPU for the benefit of SLI would be good enough for now, and to wait on upgrading to the newest chipset. Would anyone else agree with that idea?

atm upgrading to the x99 platform wont give you better gaming performance, those CPU's have more cores but run at lower speeds, and most games dont benefit from more cores. The RAM however is faster, but wont give you noticable gaming performance neither. just stick with the 4790k and invest in a second gtx 980 if you are playing on higher resolutions. if ti's jsut 1080p, dont even bother

You already have a screaming system. I guess I am sitting here wondering why you feel the need to make it faster. You already have a 4790... You already have SSD storage, in fact your have 2 SSDs, you already have tons of memory. And you have a pretty damned fast Video Card. I think the Titan X might be a little bit faster, but its $1000 too.

Sometimes, SLI makes things faster. And sometimes SLI just doesn't do real well. Depends on the game, the drivers, and so on.

So I go back to my first feeling on your post. What is making you feel the need to upgrade?

I'm interested in gaming performance, so based on the above posts a second GPU would be the way to go. Looking down the line at some of the games coming out in the future like battlefront 3, I'd like to have the best system possible. :)

plus, I can get parts at wholesale pricing due to the fact that I work for a disti. and I play in 1440p as well so the second gpu will get ordered tomorrow!
