Right now I currently have a 4670k and a gigabyte z87x-hd3 motherboard. I want to upgrade to an I7 (preferrably 4790k) should I'll be giving the I5 to a friend. Should I also upgrade my motherboard to a z97 motherboard or just stick with the one I currently have? Is there any benefits to upgrading the mobo? I do plan to overclock the I7.

If you don't want to do a BIOS update on the new Haswell refresh then the Z87 will be fine. But the Z97 is a good choice if you can fork out the cash. I recommend the Asus Maximus for the overclocking.

It is completely up to you if you want to give the i5 to your mate. 😉

Is it really worth upgrading to the new mobo? Will it overclock better?
I'm not really giving it to him, more like sell it to him a lot cheaper than retail 😛

If I was in you shoes and have the Z87. I would keep it. But if I was again and have the money and don't mind spending it then I'll get the Z97.
