[SOLVED] upgrade Toshiba Satellite C855-1JD

Hi all, I am going to change the CPU of my Toshiba C855-1JD PSKCCE currently equipped with an i3-2310M with 988 rPGA socket. Here are the characteristics of the motherboard and the current CPU:

Being SANDY BRIDGE architecture, my choice fell between an i5-2520M or i7-2620M .... or i7-3632QM and i7-3612QM which however are IVY BRIDGE. I chose all CPUs with 35W TDP as the original. Which of these processors do you recommend that in addition to being compatible avoid overheating the laptop too much?

You will need to find out which i5 and i7 processors your model originally shipped with, if any. That would help narrow down compatibility.

The 3632qm would be the ultimate as it doubles the cores and improves the single thread performance significantly:

But I haven't found where anyone has installed this in the c855 series. However, the i5-3230m came factory installed according to one site I found, and it is a pretty good upgrade if the 3232qm doesn't work:

Heat shouldn't be an issue since you are in the same tdp range. The Ivy Bridge processors have better memory bandwidth and better integrated graphics so it would be worth trying if the cpus are cheap enough:

thank you for your reply and following your advice I found this original toshiba model with HM76 chipset with i7-3632QM. Do you think I can proceed to update my laptop with the same processor ???

With this being a completely different model number and chassis number, it doesn't really help as that model will surely have a different motherboard and bios, which are also critical for processor support. The best source for the information you need would be from a factory service manual that shows all the parts for your model.

following your advice I tried to look for toshiba laptops with factory installed i7 and i5 processors but that had the same BIOS version currently present on mine (v.6.80 of 22/01/2014) and I found these:
i7-3630qm
i5-3230m

also the L850 / C850 / L855 / C855 series share the same motherboard:

At this point I ask you what do you recommend? 35w or 45w? I5 or try i7 ???

Great work! I think you could install the higher tdp i7 and it would work, but without your laptop having a cooling solution for it, it would probably overheat or have the fan running at 100% constantly. If you are not going to be taxing the laptop at 100%, you might be able to get away with manually setting the fan to 100% and running it this way, but laptops are very, very sensitive to any heat production so this may damage other things.

Because you can essentially get almost any processor to run, I would find the fastest supported 35w tdp processor you can for your application. I think this was the 3632qm in my earlier research.

I was willing to try with the 35w i7-3612qm but on the net I found only L850-b147 that mounts it (from a site that I don't know if it is reliable) .... nothing about i7-3632qm.
Since it already comes with the i7-3630qm from the factory, do you think I could put the i7-3612qm on without problems?
on cpu upgrade it gives me perfectly compatible on HM76 chipset:
