I am planning on building a pc soon and I am wondering if I should buy a full version of windows ME or 2k or upgrade. I can get the upgrade versions for $30 through school but I am wondering if there is any technical \ performance \ reliability differance between the full and upgrade versions
I know it is supposed to be the same but if I upgrade my old win 98 will I still have all the stupid oem programs or does it just make sure that there was a previous windows and then totally re-format the hard drive?
amy info would be nice

One thing you can do is purchase the upgrade version, and when you install onto a blank HDD, it will ask you for proof of ownership of a previous version. I think that at that point, all you have to do is insert a Win95/98/SE CDROM, and it'll go through.

yes, arrow is right. In fact when it asks for proof you can even use the WIN98SE upgrade(doesn't have to be full) version and it'll work.

You can also use 95 or the first disk in a 95 floppy set. Yes they are rare but i keep one around for that reason.

What their not telling you is that most upgrades crash after a week or even a couple of days as I've seen... So your best off just buying the full version.. I would even stay away from ME, for most people it crashes constantly and sometimes it just never works right.. Why do you think Microsoft hasn't even put out a patch for it yet? Their just trying to make some quick dough till their Windows XP comes out.. They don't care if the OS sucks, they just wanna make some quick cash.. Like did we really need 3 versions of 95? First version of 98 sucked. Thats one reason why I love Linux.. Your best off just buying the full version of 2000 or 98SE..

I use the upgrade version of WinMe. It is the exact same as the full version except it pauses in the install and asks for proof of a previous version of Win98. I just switch the CD for the old Win98, let it do its check, and put the upgrade CD back in. I always format the HD before upgrading to do a clean install.
