Phillip Corcoran :
I understand that the Prestige is simply an external hard drive, so it should work fine on Windows XP & Windows 7 since the driver is built in to Windows. Transferring files between the two Windows' versions is entirely possible without any special preparation reqired.
The problem is not necessarily the drive, rather the software (driver). The installation CD included an 8-yr old driver for XP. Furthermore, accessing driver updates on the Lenovo (Iomega) site produces a prominently displayed warning to install updates In SEQUENCE. My guess is that this should not affect me as this is a first-time driver installation, however that is only a guess.
Additionally, the Prestige is technically a NAS backup, albeit quite undersized in today's market. It is just that I have it, my laptop has only 130GB of used space, and I don't care to use this for photos or videos.
SO, (1) Will Firmware 2.104 allow my W7 laptop to access ANY data stored on the Prestige; and (2) will I be able to access the Prestige with my XP laptop (using the provided XP installation disk) if I first set up the Prestige with my XP laptop?
My gut instinct suggests that to save time I simply buy a WD 2TB My Book, hard-wired to my laptop, install the XP Prestige on the XP laptop, back-up my XP file directories to the Prestige, then download to a 32GB USB drive for transfer to my W7 laptop. Once transferred, continue back-ups to the WD My Book. Naturally, I would prefer not to have to spend the money on a second external drive.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
