If i use a friends xp cd to upgrade a new hard drive to windows 7 and I pay for the upgrade, can my friend continue to use his xp on his computer?

yes but you cannot upgrade to Windows 7 from xp you will have to do a vista upgrade then 7 upgrade.

not true you can upgrade directly from XP, however this is what i did and it can be a big problem if you need to do fresh installs of Win7 because you have to do 2 installs if you have the upgrade CD's. I would say learn from my errors and just get the OEM version.

The windows retail license agreement permits installation on only one PC at a time.
Even if you upgrade XP to Win7 your friend will need to uninstall his XP, since your system will be using that XP license + Windows upgrade license
