Upgrade?

I think I just broke some of the pins on my Pentium 4. I had a P4 2.4GHz 533MHz FSB with 512kb L2 cache. I don't know much about my motherboard except that it came in my Gateway 700S and the BIOS string is MV85010A.15A.0086.P15. I think that my processor is a Northwood. Can anyone tell me what processors are compatible with my motherboard? How far can I upgrade?

I dont think far at all.... the 533mhz P4's were the old style socket 478. You can get one prety identical to your cept it has 1MB L2 cache for about 100$

As far as upgrades you dont have much headroom, you can go to a 2.8 but I dont suggest it... the socket is dead espically limited to your FSB.

I guess my next question is does may MoBo support HyperThreading and do I have replace my processor with a 533MHz P4 Northwood?

I've got the same proc. It's not really worth upgrade.

that processor probably wont post at all on his motherboard, and even If it did I high suspect that without some type of modified bios that it would work due to the higher FSB speeds and the dual cores.


When I say dead I mean its a dead end, meaning no future no where to go. And 99% of everyone on this fourm would agree, unless the most intense thing you want to do is open an internet browswer and get your email. His processor could still be purchased... but it hardly worth the cash it would cost. In his case the best/only step if funds are restricted are to simply rebuy his old proc for about 100-110$.

For his situation it might as well be dead... his mobo might not even have AGP (meaning still the original PCI video card interface)

His hardware is long since outdated, and no CPU upgrade will be worth the investment.

Will my mobo accept a 2.8GHz 533MHz FSB 1MB L2 cache Prescott if I currently have a 2.4GHz 533MHz FSB 512kb L2 cache Northwood or am I restricted to Northwood?

yah i dont have an AGP slot

and csarvis - srry i dunno, gotta ask someone smarter dun worry u'll have an aswer but im pretty sur eif its the same socket and it fits u should be fine

You might try a 6800GS as their now at or under 200$. The CPU will bottleneck alot of whatever you want to do...

but as long as playing at above 1024x768 with over 40fps is important you shouldnt be in that bad of shape save the few games that are nuts with the pixel shaders like AOE3. The game will be playable at decent framerates mind you... it was more or less playable with this radeon 9200. This is just a last attempt at saving that rig, do your homework for the future

Thanks for the info. I actually was looking at upgrading my agp video card very soon. I just wasn't sure what I should get. I'll have to talk with you sometime about the other upgrades I have planned.

You MUST use a Northwood. Prescott won't even POST. And your board likely supports HyperThreading, but only with the P4 3.06 as that's the only Northwood with 533 and HT.
