Hey, I'm looking for help upgrading my i5 6400 to a 7th or 9th generation CPU but I don't know if it fits the socket or is compatible. So if you could tell me if it was it would be nice

Specs:
(OS Windows 10)
(GPU: 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 (NVIDIA))
(motherboard LENOVO 364A (U3E1))
(RAM 16,0GB Single-Channel Unknown @ 1064MHz (15-15-15-36))
(Cpu Intel Core i5 6400 @ 2.70GH Skylake 14nm Technology)

You will be stuck to 6th or 7th generation CPUs (if Lenovo has a 7th gen bios update available).

Even though 8th and 9th gen CPUs share the same socket, due to chipset limitations a motherboard compatable with 6th gen cannot be compatable with 8th or 9th gen and vice versa.

Upgrading to a 7th gen CPU would be a BIOS update, assuming Lenovo supports it. An 8th or 9th gen would need a motherboard replacement.

However, it would be safer to go with an i7 6700 or 6700K as those should be supported off the bat. Going up to a 7th gen i5 won't be much of an upgrade and a 7700K isn't that much faster than a 6700K.

Edit: It looks like the system was also sold with an i7 6700 non-K, so that support should be baked in already. I haven't found anything where anyone has upgraded past that point so it might not be possible.

If your current PC is the Lenovo Y710 Cube which seems to have the motherboard you have mentioned, the best option is the Intel i7-6700 non K. A 8th or 9th Gen CPU will not work at all...For a minimal upgrade, I would look at the 6700 and get another stick of RAM to match the one you have so that you have the RAM working in Dual Channel which will be much, much better. Try to get a 6700 second hand from ebay or the like to keep costs down. The GTX 1080 that you have is a very good GPU so you have a good foundation and a 6700 will make a difference.

I found this about upgrading your CPU on that PC/Motherboard:
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Gaming-Desktops/Lenovo-y710-cpu-upgrade/td-p/3902021

The following CPU upgrades are compatible with your system so a 6700 is the best bet:
  • 03T7445 Intel Core i5-6400 2.7G 4C
  • 03T7446 Intel Core i7-6700 3.4G 4C
  • 01AG017 Intel Core i3-6100 3.7G 2C
  • 01AG043 Intel Core i5-6400 2.7G 4C
  • 01AG040 Intel Core i7-6700 3.4G 4C
Other than that a new motherboard and CPU would be the other option, something like a Ryzen 3600 and B450 motherboard which should run at about $300...Or if you dropped down to a Ryzen 2600 you are looking at around $240.
