Today I got a new internet service installed where I was supposed to get 1gbps (although you can always just get 80-90% of that). But my speeds are the same if not worse then before. I had a router extention and I was using an ethernet cable from it and I was getting only 100. Since I own a laptop I moved it nest to the router and connected it with a cable straight into the main router. To my suprise I got the same speeds. So I tried WiFi and I still had the same speed. There was however a WiFi connection there that was ''5G''. I connected to it and, well I got 500mbps on that one...It wouldn't really be a problem if I could use the 5g from my room and I cant just move next to the router. So my situation is rather strange since when I use my ethernet cable I even get less speed than when connected with wifi... Is it a problem in my laptop or do I need to call my provider?

thank you for your time

The networking connection on the laptop may only be 10/100 or fast ethernet and not gigabit. That would only top out at 100Mbps instead of the 1Gbps. Did you supply the router or did the ISP. If it's your router it may be an issue with the routers capability. Your standard SB6141 DOCSIS3 modem is not capable of gigabit speeds.

Just checked my cable which I was using directly to the main router and its a Cat 5E. The router extender is a TP-Link TD-W8970, as for my main router it's one made by the provider itself so I can't really give you the name of it.

As far as my laptop goes, it shows here that I have a Intel(R) Dual Band Wirelles-AC 7265 and a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller. I don't know if these were the specs you are looking for since I don't know much about network equipment.

It was my ISP that supplied me with the main router, and as for my router extention it does in fact support gigabit speeds

Well I tried it before and I listed in the post, I get 100mbps. which is kind of strange since I should be getting a lot more

Thats what I thought but wanted to make sure, have you tried a different cable?
What is the link speed you are getting in Windows for the Ethernet connection (also make sure to disable wifi when testing)

I was using different cablesyes, but I'll try to see if I can find some other one.

As far as link speed goes, it says there that I have 1.0 Gbps

With a link speed of 1Gbit to the ISP Provided router and you are only getting 100Mbit I would contact your ISP and see what they can do something is not right, the only other solution I can think of us using a different server to test your bandwidth to, something close to where you are located.

Thing is, there a WiFi connection which is ''5G'' and when connected to that I get 500mbps. I don't really know much about networks but I find it quite strange to have one connection working at high speeds while the others are real 'slow'.

I might call my ISP to check it up.
