As the title mentions, I'm trying to upgrade my old AMD fx 8350 to my new i5 8600k. Old motherboard was something like Gigabyte 990 gaming, new intel mobo is Asrock z370 extreme 4. These are the ONLY components I'm upgrading, except new ram is obviously DDR4.

I powered it on, all fans run and the LEDs turn on, but the screen stays black. I tried plugging hdmi into my graphics card, and also removed the graphics card and plugged hdmi into the mobo integrated graphics. I'm really at a loss as to what the problem is.

To boot with same windows with upgrade you must do correctly following these.
run msconfig.exe (By Windows Button + R)
Click boot tab
check boot options: Safe Boot: Minimal
And then shutdown the pc.
Install the upgrade then start pc.
after it has boot correctly, run msconfig.exe again, then uncheck safeboot
then reboot. it should then be able to boot windows correctly without reinstalling Windows.

Did you try everything I suggested to get it to POST. If that doesn't work break it down to the basics and see if it will POST.

Basics
- Reset CMOS
- Motherboard
- PSU connected to the main 24 pin connector and 4/8 pin CPU connector
- CPU (Heatsink and CPU fan)
- One RAM module (if it won't Post try another other by itself in another slot)
- Power switch (if motherboard does not have one built in)
- Monitor to integrated graphics
- Nothing else

If it won't POST with just the bare minimum basics connected. Then there is likely something wrong with the Motherboard or CPU. It is quite unlikely two or more new RAM modules would all be defective.

If it will POST. Start to add components back one at a time until you find the culprit. I'd do Keyboard and Mouse next then the GPU next (don't forget PCIe power connectors if necessary). Then other cards, storage devices and anything else.

Be sure to have the power off whenever adding or removing components.

Gentlemen,

I happened to find a POST speaker and plugged it in. Heard 3 beeps, that points me to ram. Had another stick of ram, installed new ram, and pc booted up just fine.
