Upgraded -> Lower performance

I just upgraded my Athlon 2500+, 512 RAM to a Athlon 64 3500+, 1 GB RAM (in dual channel mode). My 3DMark score with a GeForce 6800 Ultra went from 5000 down to 4300. I have yet to do more tests and try more setup stuff, as I am going to bed right now, but if anyone knows what certain setup things must be made for an Athlon 64 system, let me know. Thanks.

Also, you do have the CPU at the correct HT settings etc?

I didn't do a clean install because it would have taken too long to back up all my stuff, as I am no longer on a network.

But, I reinstalled 3DMark05 and now the score is 4950 at GeForce 6800 speeds 401/1155, whereas on my old system it was 5008 at 425/1167.

But, what's most important is that my Half-Life 2 benchmark went from 55 FPS to 93 FPS. There is a huge difference in HL2, no more studders and slow downs while playing. Rome: Total War also runs a lot nicer now.

I think my meager 480 Watt power supple is holding me back from clocking my 6800 any higher, as it crashes right away at higher speeds.

You could reinstall into another directory, or bood from bootdisk and delete windows directory, then install os back, preserving all data files.

You could also boot into safe mode, go to control panel->system->device manager and delete everything there to do with you motherboard, IDE ports, etc, then reboot and let the computer find and install the new drivers.

If that doesn't work, you will need to do a fresh install.

Thanks. But, I think it is running okay now. HL2 has like an 80% increase in framerates, and with the 3DMark05 reinstall it is scoring about what it should for what I have my card clocked at (which is faster than what the XP 2500+ was scoring at the same video clock speeds).

3dmark03 doesnt really depend on your cpu that much... so yea if your getting almost double framerates in HL2, id say your ok

Those mysterious combined benchmark scores always get you. There's no way of knowing what weights they apply to each section of system performance in 3DMark, when it spits out a single number for your "system performance".
