Upgraded motherboard for dell inspiron 530

I have an older Dell Inspiron 530 I'm giving to my son. Does anyone have any experience with upgrading the motherboard on this unit and still be able to keep the same box?

I'm not positive on that model but as far as I know Dell uses BTX motheboards in all of their systems so you cannot re use the case with anything other than another dell board.

I had an XPS 720 that I would have loved to have been able to re-use the case but it was simply not possible.

Dell do typically make there cases specific to the motherboard in my experience with them.

I would recommend buying a cheap video card to help speed up the computer.

I recently did this with some difficulty. The Inspiron 530 case has no cut out for the motherboard face plate. I used a pair of tin snips to cut a rectangular hole to fit the new face plate. It is a little crude, but I managed by sheer luck to line it up correctly.

The other minor issue is the front panel connector. You have to remove the wires from the connecter, trace them back to the power button and LEDs and connect them properly to your new motherboard's front panel header.

Otherwise, the case has the proper holes for mounting a micro ATX board. I installed an ASRock Z68 board which has been working great.

Why is it that you want to be able to upgrade the motherboard in this computer to something else?

DELL has a long history of trying to re-engineer their parts so they are maximally useless with anyone else's parts, obviously so they can lock people into buying upgrades through DELL rather than companies that are forced to compete with each other.

Since I have freed myself from DELL, I haven't been sorry. I would get a new motherboard and a new low end case to go with it. You can get an entry level case starting from about $20 shipped.

I can't speak for the OP, but the Inspiron 530 case is actually a nice small and light case that is uncluttered inside. I wanted to keep mine.

As far as your other comments, none of them apply in this particular case. The Inspiron 530 uses a standard micro ATX motherboard, standard PSU (with standard power connector) and standard everything else as far as I can tell. There is no reason to buy upgrades from Dell. The only real issue here is that the motherboard I/O back plate is built into the case.

But after having messed with altering the case to install a different motherboard, I agree that the best idea is to just buy a new cheap case.

hi,maybe it's little late for the unser ,I got one like it and it's had worked on windows vista and I upgrate it to windows 7 and then windows 8 and 8.1 and finally windows 10,it's work very very fast and you may ask how does that happend,I'll tell you,I have cheked on line about the mother bord and I found the fastes processor that the motherbord can take,it's E8600 , my idvice it to by it used from ebay like I did and I add another two memory cards each one of them is one giga bit ,I would want to us more than that but the motherbord can't take more than 4Gb memory and if you by 2 memory card each one 1Gb is very cheep and I have chang the power supply 300W with new one 700W (you dont have to do that) because I have put new nvidia graphic card GT 750 4Gb,now my pc is fast like dreem ,It's really back to life and It can serve me for atleest two years before I need to by new one,I dont like the laptop because you cant upgrat it ,I hope that would help you and if you need to know anything ,just write to me.

mum's old inspiron 530 and i want to upgrade it enough to hold 60 ffps on most games so i have got better ram for it but i read that the motherboard only takes a intel duo processor, are you saying you made it work with something more powerfull? i'm very new to building computer and i would love to hear you're advice on what to use in the dell

Hello Lewis,how are you? thanks for writing to me,every motherboard has limited processor speed and limited space of RAM,for the Inspiron 530 the highest RAM it can take is 4GB ,no more,thats what is the motherboard can take ,any thing more than 4GB the motherboard will read it as 4GB only, I have two RAMS in my pc each one is 1GB ,so, I bought two more RAMS each one is 1GB from ebay because it's cheaper and so I had 4GB, for the processor ,the fastest one that the motherboard can work with is the E8600, its core 2 DUE 3.6 and that's not bad,you can buy it used like I did ,it's cheaper from ebay,if you decided to add a graphic card you need to chang the power supply ,because it's only 300W and you need something like 700W or more,these are the most important thing for you games,wish you the best of luck and if you need to ask about anything ,writ to me I will be happy to answer you.

I've got 8gb in mine, and it recognises it fine - I think it was restricted to 4gb when using a 32-bit OS rather than 64-bit OS. I also upgraded from a E4300 to a E8600, then also installed an SSD for the OS (Win 7, then Win 10).

The machine works like a dream now.
