Hi, and thanks for the resource.

I'm old, my name is David, and the grandson-type and I, built him a modest first PC.

It had a GTX 460, and was humming along, but for some more grunt we added a GTX 680, and then almost immediately I ran across an RX 580. He's in a rural location with a metered connection, he's 12, and losing his mind.

I now have the PC, I'm not on a metered connection, in my sixties, and I have lost my mind. I'm not very savvy, but I'm significantly more patient than "Carson".

He called me up, when he found the RX 580 sitting on his bed, after arriving home from school.

I suggested; reading a bunch of tutorials, and watching a bunch of YouTube how 2 vid's. I suggested including several of each, that included switching from nVidia to Radeon, and understand that because it's a Ryzen 7 cpu he needed to get it right the first time--or risk flying blind. He was then supposed to contact me, explain his proposed process, and we would go from there. (I was advocating using the GTX 680 long enough he would be able to discern the difference in an approximately 50% boost between the GTX 460, the GTX 680, and the RX 580.) I was in no rush, but I'm not a twelve year old boy. I further encouraged him to check out tech sites, find one where he thought their sensibilities would mesh well with his, read their rules & stickies, introduce himself, post his sig & ask if anyone had the time to look over his shoulder while he attempted the 680 to 580 upgrade. (I specifically told him I would check out this site, and Hardware Canucks, as well as others he ran across.)

Not to put too fine a point on it--but let's just say he decided to streamline the process.

I got a harried phone call, from his mom, Carson was very upset that things were not going smoothly. After downloading the drivers (RX 580), he removed the GTX 680, and installed the RX 580. The card's light came on, but it wouldn't wake up the monitor--"no signal". I suggested putting the GTX 680 back in, and see what happens. This precipitated an epic meltdown (Carson not the PC)--when the pc kept endlessly rebooting.

I ended up with the PC back, I tried all three cards, two monitors, and two different cables/ports (HDMI & the old VGA? with stacked plastic adapters as the 460 has no HDMI), and got nothing but a black (no signal) screen.

I'm stumped. (With the Ryzen 7 not having an apu/on board graphics.) Only thing I can think of is, buy a cheap AMD processor with apu that fits in the A4 socket. So far I've only found an AMD A6-9500E Bristol Ridge Dual-Core 3.0 GHz Socket AM4 35W AD9500AHABBOX Desktop Processor Radeon R5 and that's about $150 cdn. delivered thru the Egg.

I will appreciate any advice, and Carson would be over the moon if we could get him up and gaming/surfing porn? again.

(btw: the keyboard is not illuminating--not sure how long that's been going on, or why. There's broken plastic suggesting truama, but none mentioned by Carson.)

Thx eh.

All modern era cards lack vga/analog support. So don't try using those. If the last drivers loaded were for the 580, use that card. Plug it in, hdmi only, does it work? If it fails, reset the bios. Is it better?

I'm back, I was looking up 'lady driver' -- (fyi, it's a movie :)) I misread 'last' I guess.

Thanks so much for the reply. I think the last driver was for the GTX 680. Carson said he downloaded latest RX 580 driver but had not installed.

So put the GTX 680 back in, and do a hard cmos reset?

(I currently have the RX 580 card installed.) I tried that once, with the GTX 680 in, but can certainly try it again.

I was watching this video
View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh2xEUXWeqs

"AMD Radeon Graphics Driver for Windows 10 Black Screen - Step By Step Fix"
But it's pretty advanced for an old fart.

I planned on watching it a bunch of times.

I edited it. When I'm using my phone to post misspellings are rampant. Souls have been last but it came out lady. My bad. I hope lady driver isn't anything naughty. ;)

Try them both if you need to. Just don't use any adapters. The 580 with those common passive vga to dvi adapters won't work.

Does anything come on (ie : fans) at all? Do fans start ramped high then slow down? Or not at all? Are there any board leds?

As this is a b450 board it might not support an older apu lile the A6. I would check the Asus website.

That said, the Antec earthwatts 550 is an "iffy" psu. But if it worked for the 680 it should be okay for the 580.

Make sure the pcie power headers are firmly seated in the gpu's power sockets. They will not boot without them.

Unfortunately the b450m-a prime doesnt have debug leds. If swapping back to your old cards doesnt solve the issue, the mb, psu, or cpu may be fried.

I undertook my first disassembly at 18 on a 386DX. But looking back its always better to have an experienced pc person there. My nephews, whom i built gaming rigs for, are still afraid of their pc's. They are in college!

I apologize for my tardy reply, and appreciate yours. Winter has hit early here, and I was called away.

I've tried both cards, as well as the original GTX 460, numerous times--and nothing. I'm comfortable with using DDU, but I cannot get the display to show mobo screen, go into safe mode--or anything besides the basic black. There's no cursor. I've removed the cmos battery each time, and tried using the card's, and mobo's hdmi for each card. I've tried tapping restart button, while holding shift, but nothing but black. I've tried turning off (by holding power button down for 10+ seconds) and starting back up--literally until the cows came home.

Thanks for the response digitalgriffin.

Fans, and the light on the XFX RX 580 comes on--everything appears normal, except the keyboard quit lighting up (tried various usb ports), and of course the black screen/no cursor. There's no beeps, on start up, and no tone when devices are removed/added.

I'm confused about the "A6", I didn't think the Ryzen 7 2700 had integrated graphics--I'll look into A6 apu.
Not sure how a Ryzen 7 2700 apu, in an b450 Asus, would be too old to be supported. Not sure how to check that out, but I'll go back to the Asus website and keep muddling.

I'm not sure why the Antec Earthwatts 550 is an "iffy" psu--I didn't mean to slight the build for the grandson. They used to be considered a cost effective work horse, and I did check that the wattage was sufficient for gpu upgrade according to several psu wattage calculators. I can pull the psu from my pc, although I don't think its EVGA 750 watt is on another level, or a game changer. I don't want to be giving the child junk tho.

It's $300 just to put a pc on a bench here--and they invariably take it completely apart, say it can't be fixed, and suggest you buy one of their built units. I don't think I want to start buying, and replacing, cpu, mobo or psu just yet.

Should have just bought him a laptop I guess.

There are no ryzen 7s with igp. If it's a ryzen cpu and has igp it will have a G at the end. Your board should have no trouble with that cpu. The b450 boards launched with the ryzen 2xxx cpus in mind. There could be issues if you had a b350, but you don't. And if it did work that means the bios wasn't updated to run the newest 3xxx cpus. Wait, did you update the bios?

If you are running the newest bios they removed support for the 2xxx cpus. As i understand it you can't go back either. If you updated the bios to the newest one that's the problem. Otherwise it sounds like it's not posting at all. I'd start with double checking all the obvious things. Reseat the ramsticks, double check the wires, etc.

Thanks 4745454b, I've tried everything--in the way of checking connections. Several times now, and no joy.

I started off with 'two ways to get into safe mode', and worked my way thru '5 ways to get into safe mode' but there doesn't seem to be any info specific to newer Ryzens not having an igp. Much of what I've read seems to be saying; the PNP has chosen the wrong driver, I need to run a DDU--but if I can't make it into safe mode I'm sol on running the utility. o_O

Edit: sorry, the bios were updated a few months ago, or so, when the build was completed--we didn't use the disc, they were off the Asus site.

The following have built in graphics (and don't get a dedicated separate GPU)
2200G
2400G
3000G
3200G
3400G
220G
240G

The following do NOT have built in graphics and will need a graphics card
1300(X)
1500(X)
1600(X)
1700(X)
2300(X)
2600(X)
2700(X)

^----I might be missing a few models. But as you can tell the ones WITH built in graphics in with the "G" designator

Since the fans are running on the GPU, and the system will not post, and your keyboard won't even light up (caps lock or num lock) that suggest to me the CPU or Motherboard is fried.

One last thing to check is make sure the 8 pin header for the CPU is plugged in. Make sure it's the CPU header (4+4) and Not the PCIe power header. (6+2)

$70 is a basic MicroATX B450 board
That is the cheapest part to do a swap out test on.
3700X are about $300->$330.
2700X are about $214
2600X are $167
2600 are $149

I would say the 2600X and 2600 are the "Sweet spot" for a 12 year old that wants to play most modern games on 1080p

Sorry for disappearing--early winter here, and critters always get the 'priority boot'.

I disco'd everything but the cpu, every connection including the Crucial hdd (gentle contact rub with Staedtler white eraser, lite application of De-oxit & quickly wiped any lingering/excess residue) & was rewarded with bios--previously only 'no signal' black screen sans cursor.

The date was wack, reset, and it seems to be holding.

I ended up unable to go into safe mode far enough to run DDU or install ATI drivers. (switch from GeForce to Radeon gpu). Where I would like to see "Startup Settings", it's not there and it gives me the 'system image recovery' option instead--I think. It just cycles endlessly when between advanced options & start up repair.

There's no bootable device discoverable, in bios. Pressed F8 (got a big grey banner--no bootables), and tried CSM, but nothing shows up. I'm really not comfortable/knowledgeable in bios, and tend to stay out of it when at all possible. Something could be really obvious, and there's a very good chance it would escape me.

I don't even know enough to know what smarty-pants-types would find useful, in regards to bios screens. But anything, any one, would find useful ...

I escape out, and don't save changes, except when I disabled 'Fast boot' to run CMS. When that didn't seem to make a difference I put it back to 'Fast boot' enabled.

I do have a fallow Corsair Force MP510 M.2, in my rig, but if it's time to reinstall the OS and stuff, I'll be handing off. Trouble is, around here, it's $300 to set a PC on their bench, and invariably they totally dismantle, tell you it can't be fixed, and then try and sell you, 'A real computer!' Kijiji 'techs'
are risky--to say the least. :cautious:

Thanks again.

SOLVED--because, in my ignorance, I thought it made sense to be suspicious of the hdd--and it was by far the cheapest component (and easy to replace) I bought a cheap ssd hdd, & muddled thru an os install. Problem solved. With the money I saved (NOT replacing the psu, cpu, mobo etc.) I bought my wife a new ASUS laptop.

Seeing how the advice was to start replacing everything--and then the 'experts' bailed-------Tom's Hardware! You make computer issues worse.

Well, we are glad you're up and running however maybe a little bit more levity towards people who VOLUNTEER FOR FREE to help you could be useful. You see we (the people here who answer your questions) are not physically in front of your system, we aren't seeing what you are seeing so the only information we have is what you tell us, and despite you believing you're telling us EVERYTHING, something very well could be missed or lost in translation. Hence the fact that we don't nail it right every time, its just not possible. Now your last post seems that you did figure it out, and I didn't really see a question in there. Also you don't know whats going on in the lives of the people whom have been responding to you. You reply to something 7 or 8 days later, there are things that happen in peoples lives.

Again we are all volunteers and not paid to be here. So apologies if real life gets in the way of us answering computer questions for free.

My suggestion, maybe come back here with an apology to the people who got you somewhat on the right path to fixing your issue. Instead of the personal insult, which I have since removed. Otherwise you're welcome to figure it out yourself next time.
