Upgraded PC still feels slow?

I just upgraded my PC from fx6300, r9 270 to > i5-7600k and gtx 1070.

I've always had a 1TB hd and 120gb ssd and its still fairly slow.

I remember when I installed my SSD i didn't notice any increased boot time or anything like that or even when opening files and games.

Anyone have any ideas?

Okay, it is all clear now. Remember when burdenbound mentioned Speccy? It will also help you with your key. When Speccy is open you can click on Operating System and you can see all the info, including the serial key.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/20530/windows-10-reactivating-after-hardware-change can help you. If you already have 10 you can tell Windows, during the install process, that you don't have that key. It will activate it during updtes. If you don't have 10 on a disk or USB you can use https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10. Download the tool and use it to place 10 on a 16GB or larger USB drive.

Make sure your old drive is not...

Your SSD does help speed up Windows nav., boot times and game loading times among other benefits. This you know. The user's behavior can slow all that down. Open up a lemonade stand. Doesn't take long does it? Open up 19 lemonade stands. Takes longer. While your SSD can help it won't be too helpful if you have programs starting when Windows. I do have some programs outside of what's needed for Windows so my boot time isn't superfast. How fast is your boot time? Task Manager and Startup tab will show you.

That was a significant upgrade but you don't mention anything about games. Was there a gaming performance boost?

You are watching the pot now. That in itself can make it feel slower. What were your boot times prior to this upgrade?

I do agree with TJ Hooker.

SSD still had full memory, I thought it was just plug and play?
I didn't do anything aside from upgrading MOBO, CPU, RAM and GPU. Used same HD and SSD.

Ok, to confirm, your OS is installed on your SSD right?
What do you mean "full memory"? How much free space do you have on your SSD right now?

You don't necessarily *need* to reinstall the OS when you upgrade your motherboard, as in some cases Windows will manage to figure things out and keep working (which seems to be the case for you). However, it is recommended, especially if you're finding things feel slow.

Another forum often asks, in times like these, the end-user to run and save the logs from MiniToolBox and from Piriform's Speccy. Often, the background running services, modules, programs, utilities, AV/AM, hardware & software monitoring utilities, all come into play.

Sorry if I sound confusing.

Basically I have everything on my HD and then got my SSD couple months after my old build

I just plugged it in and thats it.

I thought it would make my PC faster in boot times and such?

No, an SSD is just another hard drive. It can only utilize what is located on it. You need to install your OS, and any applications you want to take advantage of it's speed, on it.

So should I remove my HD and plug the SSD in and install my programs? I'd assume id need to reinstall windows and all that.

I lost my key so i'll have to repurchase it ?

If you have Windows 10, and the license successfully activated when you put your HDD in your new build, you don't need to worry about keys or anything. You can reinstall Windows 10 on the SSD, choose "I don't have a key" during install, and it will automatically activate itself with your existing license after the fact.

You may want to think about getting a larger SSD so you are not installing programs on the slower drive and also having to change the default setup location. I would guess the programs you have on the original drive take up more than 120 GB of space, especially if you have games on it.

Just plugging in a different drive in the computer without actually installing Windows on it is like buying a new engine for a car then putting it in the back seat and wondering why it's not going faster.

Your windows license is typically tied to the system it was installed in. So it was tied to your FX 6300 build, and it did not move over when you stuck your HDD with existing OS install into your new build. What Windows version do you have?

You can try linking your license to an MS account, which would allow you to transfer the license. However, I think this may have to be done on a machine with an activated OS.
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/55398-link-microsoft-account-windows-10-digital-license.html

Or you can try contacting MS and explaining the situation, in order for them to activate your license on your new build.

Thanks for your reply!

I used the code found from Speccy but it says "error code:0x80041023".

Contacting Microsoft right now.

I got windows 10.

If nothing prevails I think i'll leave the HD as is, and buy windows and fresh install it on the SSD.

Remember what we said about the key? Don't fill it in. Tell Windows You don't have it. Skip this step.

You did see where you can download 10 from right? It's within this post.

But now that you're on the horn with them they will probably fix your issue. Let us know how this turns out, and thank you for the update.

Thank you, I will download that onto my SSD shortly.

I understand that I have to go into bios and change the boot order or the ssd/hd type?

edit: activated my windows 10 by going into settings > updates &* security > activation >troubleshoot> and it'll show your pc and click it and hit activate

You can either change the boot order so that USB is first, or if your BIOS has a boot override option you can select to boot from the USB for the next boot only. When installing Windows on the SSD, make sure your HDD is disconnected. After installation, yes you'll want to make sure your SSD is at the top of the boot order list.

Thanks for that.

I am going to back up my HD before doing anything.

I do have a question, currently my HD has 400GBish of Data and my SSD is only 120gb.

So once I fresh install the OS onto the SSD how would I transfer all my files such as music, photos to the SSD? and whatever I do transfer on the SSD will boot up faster? If so, I'll just keep the OS, Google, and main files such as games, skype and files such as speccy. Then how would I access my other files from my HD such as documents, photos ect..

Thank you

.

"...how would I transfer all my files such as music, photos to the SSD..." I recommend against putting any Data folder and file on the SSD, leave the SSD only for Windows and any 3rd party program install. Meaning all data folders and files can remain on the non-SSD, the patter-driven, hard-drive.

After you do the fresh windows install on your SSD (with the HDD disconnected) and your back in your system all nice and squeaky clean, you can plug the HDD back in, format it (so that windows is no longer installed on this drive and since you are going to back up your HDD on another drive), and then transfer the contents from your backup drive back to the HDD.

Your original HDD will then be the secondary drive (D:\) in your system to be used for mass storage and anything that won't necessarily benefit from SSD speeds.

I just finished the install, is there any way to get my old chrome back? I had all my passwords saved from various sites, bookmarks and such.
