I recently upgraded from an as rock z77 extreme 4 and an i5 2500k to a MSI Z87-G45 gaming and an i7 4790k, and now when I plug my computer in and press the power button, the graphics card and the motherboard light turn on for a fraction of a second, the fans begin spinning, then it shuts down. It behaves the same way with everything unplugged except the case power strip and the motherboard, including the RAM. My current belief is that the motherboard is broken, as while I ordered it new, it case without and io shield, which makes me think that it was opened. I have no idea how to test this, and i have no other ideas about what the problem could be. My other parts are: 750 watt PSU, 8gb G-skill DDR3 1600 RAM, one SSD, and three HDDs. I'm at a loss of what to do right now, so any advice would be helpful. I'm also wondering if I should return the motherboard or go to a local computer repair shop first. Thanks.

One possibility is that your motherboard's bios isn't updated to support haswell refresh CPUs. Most of the time when boards are sold they have been updated, but not always. It would need to have version 18 bios

If that is the case, the only thing you can do (unless you happen to have a supported CPU available to you) is bring it in to a shop and have them flash the bios for you.

I don't know 100% if this is your problem, but it is a possibility for sure.

I read that some people fried their i7 4790ks by putting them in MBs with outdated BIOs. Is this possible? and if so, how can I check to see if my CPU is fried?
