Hello and thanks for the helpful forums

I’m way overdue for a new computer. However, finances dictate that the cheapest upgrade(s) possible is the only route for me. I have a Gigabyte P35-DS3R (2.1) with Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (2.4GHz) and 4 gigs of DDR2 (4x1gb) – PC2-6400 (400MHz). GeForce GTS 250 running at 1920x1200. Window 7. I mostly play World of Warcraft, Skyrim, and am looking forward to playing GTA 5. I also use some basic software, like Microsoft Office, occasional Photoshop, & Chrome. I plan on using gift cards and xmas money for upgrades, and don’t expect to be able to play with much more than $200. I’m used to playing these games not on cranked up settings, so I don’t need top of the line anything. Just more bang for my buck.

I have started researching a few components, but am feeling overwhelmed since I need to do so much. I have already started my upgrade process by getting a Samsung SSD 850 EVO. It’s only the 120 variety, but I have to start somewhere. I believe RAM and videocard are my best options. I am hoping that you can give me a few suggestions on some upgrade choices. I don’t know what to look at for RAM…. DDR2-400, 800?? Something else? Gigabytes memory compatibility chart isn’t particularly helpful. And for a vidoecard I was looking at the EVGA GTX 750ti.

Pcpartpicker shows Crucial DDR2-800 2x2gb at $30.50. So 8gigs for $61. Is that even compatible with my board? The website shows 4 varieties of the EVGA gtx 750ti at different prices. I don’t know what the difference is between the 4, thus my request for help please. I also don’t know anything about bottlenecks (or how to learn more about them). Is the 750ti more card than my mainboard and/or cpu can handle? Should I upgrade my cpu? If you can elaborate on my choices or suggest better components I would really appreciate it. Also, if you think a different upgrade path would be better.

I have more case than I'll ever need with the Cooler Master Cosmos. PSU looks like a 610w.

Thank you so much

Sincerely,

ChrisB

Ideally find another 4 gig stick of RAM exactly like the one you already have and use them in dual channel mode[ color coded slots]
But that will only help if you have a 64 bit copy of Windows . If you have 32 bit version then more RAM will not help .

Buying second hand from a computer shop with a parts bin may be your best bet . It will be incredibly helpful [ assuming you have a 64 bit OS ] to get a 2 x 4 gig kit of 1066 or 1200 MHz RAM .
That would make overclocking the processor very simple because you can set the RAM to 800 Mhz and then as you increase the FSB to raise the processor speed the RAM will not be running too fast

This

looks like the best value 750ti .
There is a potential catch with adding a more modern graphics card though . There is a small chance it wont run in the first generation pci-e x 16 slot you have . Very small chance , but something to be aware of .
