I am wanting to update my 2600K CPU to something more modern. I am trying to decide between a 4770K or the 5820K as my next CPU but can't decide. I do some video encoding with my pc but haven't been able to find comparisons between the two processors. So I decided to come and ask the community their thoughts.

If you can afford the upgrade to a 5820K platform then go for it, just keep in mind X99 boards are more expensive than Z97 boards, plus you'd need to get DDR4 RAM which is quite pricey. But the jump from quad Sandy to hexacore Haswell would be pretty nice.

Otherwise I don't think it's worth it - the upgrade from a 2600K to a 4770K wouldn't be worth the money IMO. The performance jump is only around 20%.

While the 2600k is miles ahead of its predecessor, the 4770k is not that much faster. A six-core 5820k will benefit much more in video rendering and photoshop applications, though. But if you're not heavy into video encoding, then stick with the 2600k and wait and see what Skylake brings.

I was pretty certain that I wanted to upgrade to the 5820K mainly for the encoding as well as the performance improvement over the 2600K. So you guys just reaffirmed what I was wanting to do. Although I may wait and see what the jump with Skylake will be since the 2600K is still a beast in my opinion.
