My system is:
Case: HAF X
CPU: 4690k (stock speed. could not overclock very much)
RAM: 2x4gb 2133
Mobo: ASUS Maximus VII Hero
Cooler: Noctua NH-D15
HDD: 2TB Western Digital Black
GPU: GTX 970
PSU: XFX 650W
OS: Win 10 64 bit

My question lies in wanting to migrate to current gen SSD's. Is it feasible to use my M.2 slot? I am concerned my motherboard's slots would cripple SSD performance. The system has mild use over the 6 year lifespan.

Is it better to switch to 3rd gen Ryzen (i.e. 3600,3700x...)? Is the pcie4.0 slot worth the additional cost over a pcie3.0 based chipset?

For an SSD, I am on a budget of 150 USD. For cpu/ram/mobo about 450 USD. Primary use is gaming with mild web browsing and homework. Games played are not intensive (League of Legends, Guilty Gear Xrd, Binding of Isaac, Minecraft and unlikely some AAA titles.) Monitor is 144hz and 1080 resolution. Don't plan on going 4k resolution. AR/VR are not on my plan either.

Would it be better to splurge on upgrading the motherboard for maximum ssd performance or can my old rig not suffer too much loss from limited tech in the slots?
