Hi there

Hoping to find some advice on upgrading a Dell OptiPlex 790 for gaming, and browsing through this forum has given me more information so far than my own research!

I've just been given a standard 790 mini-tower, i5 -2400 CPU @ 3.10GHz (I'm copying this from the system information because I'm really clueless), and from looking around I understand that there are some restrictions on what I can and can't do to upgrade this machine. I'm *really* hoping to find a way to get Elite Dangerous playable on it, and as such I know I'll need to add more RAM (currently on 4gb), upgrade the graphics card (no idea here, too much information about), and upgrade the PSU (current wattage is 265w).

I don't think there is anything else I'd need to do, but if anyone sees that I've missed something please let me know!

As for budget, I'd ideally like to keep the costs down as much as possible, but I know that the graphics cards available range wildly in price. I'd be happy paying up to around £100, but cheaper if I can.

As I said, any help, advice, or just pointing me in the right direction would be massively appreciated.

Cheers!
Mark

Hello ,

give me a moment will help you for that hard price lol

okay here is the best you can do ,

4G of RAM is enough , no need to add RAM

you will need at least 400 watts power supply with 30A on 12V

and for Graphics Card , GTX 950

I dont know of you mean £100 with or without Tax so i will assume without taxes

here is what I found cheapest :

1-Zotac GTX 950 Single Fan Compact NVIDIA Graphics Card 2GB : Price : £94.95 exc. VAT

2- XFX TS 430 Watt 80+ , £25.60 exc. VAT

http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/Power+Supplies/Non-Modular+650W+or+less/XFX+430+Watt+80%2B+Bronze+Computer+ATX+Power+Supply+?productId=63630

Total 120.55 without Taxes.

this is the best you can do , if you want, I can lower it a bit around 30 pounds less by selecting AMD R7 370 ..

tell me what you think

Thanks both. I am a little concerned that the 35w limit may cause issues, and that due to this the GTX 950 is basically out of the question as it requires 90w. The 750ti looks more doable, with one I found showing a 55w requirement. Still not sure if it will work, or mess up the motherboard completely.
