Upgrading a Dell T130 higher core count workstation

Hey guys I'm looking to upgrade a Dell T130 to a processor with at least 12 cores so I can run VMs on it. This tower has the below components and the current processor is a 4-core. I'd like to swap that out with a 12-core that's compatible with the Toshiba drive listed and will support up to 128G RAM and 4 Ethernet ports minimum. Are there any issues with doing this? If not, please recommend a a processor that's around $800 max.

Toshiba MG03ACA100 1TB
32G 4x8G DDR4 ECC UDIMM

There is no CPU that will provide you that many cores in that motherboard. That motherboard only support E3 Xeons. You need E5 or Xeon Scalable for 12 cores.

So sounds like I need a new motherboard along with an appropriate CPU(s). Can I manage that for under $800? Any recommendations?

You could get a used Z820 or similar Dell workstation with dual Xeons. I think that is about your only choice.

You can get a Dell T5500 2x 6C/12T LGA1366 CPU workstation for well within that budget. RAM capcity will be high enough for several VMs.
