[SOLVED] Upgrading advice for old gaming PC

Hi all,

Looking to upgrade my rather old gaming PC to run a few new games (and do some work). I'm not after anything extravagenet, probably Civ 6, some RTS, and possibly some fantasy RPGs. I got new GPU, SSD and RAM in 2016, so I'd like advice on what components to upgrade first (or whether to not bother).

Current build:
CPU: i7 920 2.66Ghz 8Mb Cache Quad Core (did OC to 3.2 I think) (2009)
Mobo: ASUS P6T Deluxe v2
RAM: 3x CORSAIR Ddr3 1600mhz 4gb 240 9-9-9-24 Xmp Vengeance Heatspreader (2016)
3x 1 or 2 GB old RAM as well (monitor not connected so can't confirm)
GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 1060 3GB Dual-Fan OC Edition (2016)
PSU: Corsair HX-620 620w Modular PSU
SSD: Samsung Mz-75E250Bw 850 Evo 250Gb, 3D V-Nand, Sata III 6Gb/S, 2.5"
HDD: Old WD 500gb or something, slow spin (monitor not connected so can't confirm).
Monitors: Basic dell 23inch (ish) x2
Case: Large Antec
Cooling: 3x case fans

CPU Mobo RAM PSU first. They're really old. Then Id say the case if it bothers you, or buy more storage them get a new GPU

You are way past the upgrade point. You really need a new build. The only thing I see in your current build you could move to a new build would be the video card but its performance will be less than optimal.

Just to confirm, per Prad Bitt's suggestion (excellent username btw), I'd need to update CPU, RAM and mobo at the same time, right? As in a new CPU wouldn;t run on old mobo.

Yes. On Intel's side, platforms last two years at most and about three years for AMD. Memory standards also change every 5-6 years. So anyone upgrading from 6+ years old stuff needs a fresh CPU+MoBo+RAM combo unless they want to upgrade to already obsolete parts.

As in a new CPU wouldn;t run on old mobo.

Specific motherboards have socket types, and only can run CPUs that match that specific socket type, and more niche issues come with brand new cpus needing bios updates on older motherboards even when the socket types match, just for future reference always match the motherboard with the socket type of the CPU.

In that scenario with the older motherboard, it is socket LGA 1366, and would be limited in what CPUs could be "upgraded", so as previously mentioned its not really an option to upgrade. Important to remember in the future though when you do decide to upgrade, although it wouldn't hurt to make another thread when that time comes and double check what parts are compatible and fit in your budget.
