I've been rocking an i5 750 Lynnfield for the last 4 years but recently saw a deal on amazon for an i5 4670 for $185. At this price, should I upgrade? (or should I pay an extra 50 for an unlocked refresh? or maybe just wait a few more years?). I'll be primarily gaming. My current graphics card is a 760GTX. Load for modern games typically between 70%-90% CPU usage depending on the game (I've seen 99% on single cores)

(and yes I know I'll have to upgrade my mobo as well, but considering my current board doesn't have usb 3.0, PCI 3.0, nor SATA III, it seems like a good time to upgrade anyway. Amazon also conveniently has a Z87 mobo on sale as well)

no get a z97(so you can upgrade the cpu and dont have to update the mobo) and a i5 4690k (if overclocking) or i5 4690 if not. cpu's usually only get used up to 30-40% nowadays so time to upgrade

Are increases from the refresh worth the extra $50? As for upgradeability, I'm fine with flashing the bios and don't intend to upgrade cpu's for ~4 years. Do you think intel will be using the same socket 3-4 generations down the line?

the z97 boards are good for the new 5xxx series. so 5490k or i7 5xxxx so basically yeah you'll have more upgrading options and in 3-4yrs you'll have 10nm chips from intel. the refreshes are better overclockers and have better performance(not over the regular chips(just few 100mhz) but over your chip greatly.)

I very much doubt that z97 will last me until Cannonlake (which would probably be my next upgrade). Anyway, about the CPU's, I mainly brought this issue up due to amazon's gold box 1 day sale. Obviously, if the prices were within $20 of each other, I'd take the refresh no question. But for someone who doesn't overclock much, do you think a $50 increase warrants the extra few 100mhz?

no not at all then you could just get a i5 4590 or 70. but a z97 mobo would allow you to do small upgrades till cannonlake (skylake is out in 2016 cannonlake isnt going to be out probably 2019-2020)
