Question Upgrading an old HP prebuild for my son, all parts tested and working. Gpu/software issue?

The old hp in question has an AS# 656846-002 mobo in it with a 2nd gen intel gpu, we bought the pc ages ago with a gtx 450 in it. I bought a 1660 super and a 550 watt psu to upgrade it.

When I intalled the new parts it came to the boot screen an hung there, eventually giving me a beep followed by 3 fast beeps, all short beeps though. Google the first time said memory so i checked the ram were still seated correctly. Eventually double checked google and this time it said gpu or psu. (thanks a.i.) but that's what I thought the issue was anyway so that didn't really help much.

I tested the psu and gpu in my own pc both together and separately and everything worked fine so the parts are good.

I tried my 1660ti in the hp and the first boot it went straight to loading windows but froze, a restart put me back to the boot page and beeps.

I had also read that old gpu firmare could cause issues so I uninstalled the gtx 450 firmware (391.xx was the newest it supported but we're at like 591.xx now) to see if it would boot with just default windows drivers but no luck.

The board is pcie 2.0 but to my knowledge should be able to run the cards, just with lesser performance. In all of my troubleshooting I noticed that I got the same results both with and without the 8pin connected to the card. I'm wondering if there's an option somewhere in the bios that I have to enable primary card power to come directly from the gpu or something like that?

Just to be clear, this PC was working with the 450 video card and now it no longer works?
Was it still working with the 450 before you upgraded the PSU and video card, actually booted and worked right before you upgraded?

Hey there,

A lot of older mobos don't support modern GPU's. Does the bios have a legacy/uefi option for GPU? This would solve the issue. You may need to update the bios to support a newer GPU. I know from threads here in the past that often the max GPU's supported are of the GTX9xxx series.

prebuild HP motherboards are terrible for upgrades , often with very limited options in the bios .
also the processor in that system must be really old - i´m guessing sandy/ivy generation
dual core i3 or a quad core i5? with a locked multiplier of course

honestly if i were you i would ditch that motherboard and processor and
look around at second hand market places

for example i found gigabyte Z370 Aorus Gaming K3 + Intel Core i5-8600K combo for a 100 bucks
(you can find similar or slightly more expensive deals for ryzen 3600 + B450 motherboard
and often with 2x16gb of RAM and cooler already included)
and that was just a quick 3 minutes search in my region ...

the overall performance at 1080p would be much better
even using a rather low end (by todays standards) video card like 1660ti .
you can than buy a brand new 512gb m.2 drive for 30 bucks (or 1tb for 50-60 bucks) and
find a used ATX case for around 15 bucks and you are all set to play older games and even some newer titles.

Likely you have a legacy bios.
It will be monochrome and text oriented.
UEFI will be in color and web looking.

Modern cards like the GTX1660 will require a UEFI bios to be detected.
The cutover came about around the GTX 7xx series. GTX750ti might work for you.

Appreciate all the replies!

Yes the system worked with the 450 before the upgrade and after if I swap it back in.

I'll poke around in the bios and see if I can get it working, otherwise I'll check marketplace in my area for some a little less ewastey.
