Upgrading Athlon X2 5000+ Black Edition

I use my pc just for gaming and i was wondering: is it worth upgrading from 5000+BE to an Athlon II X3 425? or A2 X2 240?

I would also need a new motherboard and DDR3 memory, so it's an expensive upgrade (if it doesn't bring too much frames ofc ).

Or go the completely other way of Intel i5, i7!

Heres a comparison between the Athlon II X2 250 and the X2 5000+ and I would say its a pretty decent upgrade, around 10-20 fps gains.

However if you were to spend a little bit more and go for the Phenom II X2 550 you would see a much larger improvement in gaming. The Phenom II series has their full 6mb of L3 cache which really helps with gaming and some other applications. Heres a comparison with the 550.

As you can see, with the Phenom II you would see around a 20-40fps gain. The choice is yours my friend.

Seems like I have my upgrade path. I'm planning to keep my Athlon BE and DDR2 and buy a new m.board (http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=A770DE%2B) so i can switch to Phenom II when i feel the need for 4 Cores.

Is that an AM3 board? If so, you can NOT put an AM2 processor into an AM3 board. Socket AM3 has 938 pins vs 940 for AM2/2+, so it will not fit. AM3 board = new processor.

^That is true, AM3 processors have both memory controllers, (DDR2 and DDR3) they will work in most (most) any AM2+ motherboard, and they will work with either DD2 or DDR3 memory.
But you cannot use a AM2+ processor in an AM3 board. The AM2+ processors only have the DDR2 memory controller, and so they will not work on an AM3 board that requires DDR3 memory.
That is the difference between the 2,, the sockets are actually the same.

Plus the AM3 motherboard supports DDR3... Since we all know that DDR2 is on the way out, AM3 makes more sense now.

I'm back.

My MBO is Asus M2N-MX (it doesn't support AM3 cpu), and i am planning to upgrade to Asrock A770DE+ (AM2+/AM3 support, DDR2). This way i can keep my DDR2 ram and my Blacky CPU until i upgrade to an AM3 quad.

I'll probably get the board for Christmas and I'll get the quad when new games come, because i play just COD: MW2 now.

Didn't you check the link i provided? M2N-MX is a basic nForce 430 motherboard and it doesn't even support Athlon X2 7750..

M2N-MX doesn't even support 125W CPU's like the 6000X2 unfortunately...

I am happy I managed to get a Phenom9950 on my M2N-E tho I am handycapped by the older HT Link..

At least you will have 2 fair computers

After selling my M2N-MX i can upgrade to an AM2+ mbo for 30$ i think it's a good deal?

For $30 its a good deal. Just make sure it supports the Phenom IIs and Athlon IIs and you are sorted.

I can choose between ECS A780GM-M and Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4.

Any advice on which one to get?

There is something weird about this Gigabyte board.. it supports Phenom II cpu's but not Athlon II?
