Upgrading business to Comcast VoiceEdge and had a question.

Hello! I'm a hardware guy mostly and don't know much about networking so I'm going to ask the experts. Comcast said they are going to setup the service, but that I'm required to purchase a compatible 8 port switch that has the following requirements listed below. We are a small business with only 5 phones max.

• LAN ports must sync to FULL DUPLEX. It is recommended that the switch be con gured for AUTO duplex and AUTO speed to sync properly with IP Phones.

• PoE switches are strongly recommended but not required.

• Voice VLANs are not required.

• VLAN prioritization is recommended but not required.

How many total wired devices do you have? PCs, Printers, Projectors...?

How many total business phones?

Is Comcast also providing Internet service along with the phone service?

Is your Office wired CAT5e or CAT6, min. 2 ports per location?

Normally, if I can, I try to keep the Voice and Data traffic either on different physical networks or, if you know how, different VLANs.

IF you are NOT a networking person, Different physical networks is easier. This means a Gigabit switch for each network, a POE switch for the Phones means you do not need to use the power adapters at the desks IF the phones provided support POE.
