I have a relatively ancient 775 MB (gigabyte p45t-es3g) that was being powered by dual core e5700. Slower than molasses. I decided on upgrading the cpu and purchased a core 2 quad 9650 which is compatible with the MB.
I have had various issues and in the process purchased a new PSU (corsair 500cm i think), and new CPU cooler, and even replaced the HD.

When I installed the new CPu a few months ago, initially there were problems getting the system to work but everything was ok for the past 1-2 months.

Problems have now re-developed where the computer will shut itself down, stalls when starting, gets stuck at the MB screen.

I have tried another friends 775 CPU (specs unknown) and the same issues. I even have gotten the BSOD with messages about questions if new hardware has been installed.

Last night, I went back to the original CPU and all is fine.

Suggestions as to the problem/resolution.?

thanks

The various different problems occurring at various different times seem to indicate BIOS and/or motherboard drivers. Make sure you are running the most current version of the BIOS and when you get the question about new hardware installed reply with a Yes to have it check if different drivers/reconfiguration is needed and walk through that process.

Also double check your temperatures to make sure they are still OK. If it's still running hot pull the side cover off the case and see if the temperatures go down. That's not a permanent fix but it will tell you if you still need to upgrade your cooling with more/faster/bigger fans and/or CPU cooling.

thanks for the reply. The only bios update available is a beta version. I am currently using coolermaster hyper 212 evo and when I was checking before the shutdown, the temps were fine (<40).
The new hardware crash screen did not give me an option to do anything but restart.
