So,

I just bought a Zotac 3080 ti trinity and realised I need a new CPU to go with it as I'm not getting the performance I feel I should (my GPS barely budged from 50-60fps on cyberpunk even when I lowered my resolution from 1440p to 1080)

But, I wanted to do an all round check on Mobo, PSU etc at the same time as CPU suggestions.

Current specs:

PSU: Seasonic focus plus platinum 750W
GPU: Zotac 3080 Ti Trinity
Mobo: asus rog strix b450-f
RAM: Patriot Viper Steel 2 x 8GB 3600Mhz
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600xt (OC'd to 4.5MHz)

I was looking at either the Ryzen 7 5800x or the Ryzen 9 5900x depending on the budget I could swing.

Any and all advice appreciated

make sure the motherboard/BIOS supports whichever CPU you choose.
either the 7 or 9 series should be fine for good gaming results paired with that GPU.

PSU should be good for that particular 3080 Ti and the rest.
Zotac claims 750w recommended and that Seasonic is a nice model.

maybe want to upgrade to 2x 16GB RAM but with a lot of game titles it wouldn't really affect performance much.

Any particular reason 5800x3d is better than the 5900? The stats look pretty similar except 5900 has a higher clock
You cannot really use the spec to compare cpu’s, best to use actual reviews. The 5800X3D is a better performing cpu for gaming. If you use the pc for more than gaming you may want to consider the 5900X but for gaming only the 5800X3D is the clear winner.

Well its £25 difference for me between the 5900x and the 5800x3D So - If I can afford the 5900X No reason no to go for that.

As one final Q: Since someone flagged getting new Mobo, anyone else think this is needed and why? Also considering that I could get the CPU and upgrade mobos at a later point. Would my current mobo be enough to get what I need out of my build until the next change / upgrade?

As for RAM, Yeah Ill probably splash for 32 further down the line since RAM isnt that expensive.

Thanks so much all!

The only reason I can think of would be for PCIE4 with a 550, X570 chipset motherboard.
With the correct bios you motherboard would handle any 5000 series CPU.
The 5800x3D is faster in gaming , but the 5900x is faster for multi threaded tasks. Clock speed only matters when comparing same series cpus. The 5800x has another layer of cache for a total of 96mb L3 onboard cache.

I havent updateed the BIOS Since I bought it....... Probably a good idea but it always scared me as I heard you could brick your PC? But I suppose if I look up a guide it cant be too bad.

By suitable BIOS, do you just mean the latest version essentially? Any tips on updating?

Well for Gaming performance alone the R7 5800X will be enough the R9 wont be quicker as games don't need that many cores. I presume this is because you want to keep your Mobo?

I ask because AM4 is a dead platform now so if you are thinking about further upgrading in the future it would be worth looking at a 12600K and B660 Mobo as that will give you an upgrade path to Raptor Lake.

Yeah, I was gonna stick with AM4 just for now since there's still plenty of good CPUs - Just pushing the mobo upgrade till my next big PC overhaul, as who knows, by then there might be a mobo/ram combo and maybe I'll go a bit more all out. I'm hoping this 3080 ti will last me a good few years.

I know the 5800x3d is probably overkill but I am tempted to go for that, just read a lot of positive reviews about its performance when paired with 3070+ GPUs.

My grandson is going with this same upgrade . Last Hooorah for his board.
His is going from a 2700x on a x470 board to the 5800x3d.(was supposed to be here for Christmas) And from a 1070 SC to a 3070/TI.
Will be a massive improvement for him. and put off upgrading the whole system for a few more years.
One of the options AMD gives.
