Current System:
i7 4770k
msi z87-gd65 mobo
corsair 1kw psu
16gb ram
160ssd
2 x amd 6970 in crossfire
27" monitor, 144 hz @ 1920x1080

i have a pretty decent setup however all i play currently is counter strike global offensive. With GTA V coming out soon i want to beef up my graphics. What can i get that would be a good upgrade from my 2 X 6970's in crossfire? I was thinking about 2 Nvidia 970's in SLI however for paying $700+ i want to make sure its gonna be a good investment, does anyone have any feedback or suggestions?

Solution

SLI 970s will throw a single 980 out of water performance wise. Neither is single 980 a 'huge upgrade' from current setup performance wise tbh.

Try GTA V with your current HD6970's mate, probably good enough for the game on High/ somewhat Ultra settings anyway!
A single GTX 980 would be a nice upgrade though, and will run it maxed out.

thanks!

last question:

So there are a lot of different 970 gtx's. and they range in price from $380-$500.
I know the clock speeds vary a little bit, but is it enough that its gonna make that much of a difference? I plan on buying 2 and using an SLI setup.

Sorry for the dumb question, what is reference design color? are those just the basic ones without all the flare?
