Upgrading ddr 2 memory for intel chipset HELP

Hi,
I want to upgrade my hp7900 pavillion with 2gb or more memory. So far I have 6gb of ddr2 ram. I try to buy some cheap memory and seller stated it will work for all chipsets but it didn't and my pc is beeping like crazy so removed it. Can someone suggest what type of ram i should search for and what are the specifications i should look out for.

Thanks for your answer, I tried to add 2 more gb's of some cheap chinese memory, it didn't work.
According to a product description, it is a product with:
240-pin
PC2-6400 800 Mhz
1.8 volts
cl 6
timing is 6- 6-6 -18 as it says
non ECC

not sure about other specs. Maybe it's just a faulty product, should try with someone who has AM2 chipset.
