Upgrading Dell Dimension 2400

I've recently received a Dell Dimension 2400. I've got 500MB of RAM. An Intel Celeron 1 2.40 GHz processor. And an Intel 82845G graphics card. Now I obviously must upgrade my RAM, and my CPU. But with what and how much would it cost? I can easily get DDR sticks. I don't want to change my motherboard and I don't want to get a new computer. I want this computer to run basic online games. I can run WoW quite smoothly at the moment but I want to play a bit more. I know absolutely nothing about graphics cards but I want the best one for my PC. Any suggestions?

it is very unlikely that you would want to go through changing your processor on that PC as it would be restricted by the MoBo, therefore not really worht the money you would spend on it. if you do a crucial scan (google crucial memory scanner) it will tell you the type of RAM you can use and what the maximum size you can have per slot/in total is. then just search your favourite supplier site for that type of memory and take it from there (many people on toms hardware endorse www.newegg.com ). As far the graphics card, you would need a PCI graphics card (not PCI-E). my suggestion on that would most likely be http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500262

If you dont really want to spend that much on it, take your pick from the rest of the list (bear in mind, you really do get what you pay for)

i think its entirely amazing that you can run WoW on a DellD2400, i was getting lagging on my D3100 for age of empires 3....

1. ram is probably increasable to 2gb only, but still better than 500mb
2. your 'graphics card' is intergrated at the moment which is close to bad. as phate1337 said, that mobo only has a PCI slot, which means the graphics improvement you can expect from that PC is not at all massive.

So would it really be too hard to upgrade the CPU? Even if it was just to a Pentium 4 or something like that? And would getting the new graphics card really be a tremendous help, or would it be silly to upgrade it?

I'm able to run it with acceptable lag. Is that card truly worth the money or should I just keep the integrated one?

ok. you need to build a new pc because for that computer they dont sell socket 775 cpus anymore. unless u get them used. u could buy another 500gb stick of ram or 1gb and it will help a little not much. ur graphics card is very very low end. if u want a good gpu u need atleast 1 pci express 16x slot. but ur pc is so old i dont even know if it wil have one. it probably just has pci slots which is a complete waste of money. u need to start from scrach. buy a 1155 mobo new ivy bridge i3 cpu and a gtc 600 series or radeon 7000 seires gpu. listen to me my friend i had an old system like that and its a waste of money. i now have a fx8350 and solid parts and ill never go back

it would be a help, but you would probably then eliminate the bottleneck caused by the lack of graphics card, just to see one spring up due to your processor. changing it wouldn't be incredibly hard, but to be honest, it won't be worth it. you can put together a cheap modern PC for around £300 (GBP) if you know where to look that will run WoW quite comfortably.

So this is an old thread, but did you ever find a solution? I just saved one of these from the trash, I put in a p4 2.8ghz cpu, 2gb Ram and installed Win 7 and it seems to run just fine, I have been streaming movies for 2 days to test it out and it seems okay. An ATI Radeon 9000 256mb card will do just fine for about $20 U.S. if you still want to try to keep it running.

Dell dimension 2400
I paid $66 for 2gb 33 each for new boxed ram on trademe. Sold by a retailer. Cheap but hasn't let me down. New out the box geforce 512mb ddr pci video card. Sold instore by retailer. Running xp sp3 fully updated. Very light on resource use. No virus protection other than stinger. Stinger only runs when you want it to otherwise it does not hog resources. Disabled modems, serial and parallel ports. All connections thru usb hub. Fine tunned with tweakui, regedit and msconfig. Firewalled by windows. Disabled email but does have wireless net connection for surfing.

Runs well :bounce:

Not bad I found a 2GB lifetime warranty kit for $16 on E-bay. I would ask about Aero Performance with your video card but XP does not have it. Why disable USB hubs though? Don't you use flash memory sticks? They use no real resources, and USB mouse is better than ps/2 generally (but both work).

You can use 2GB DDR PC2700 RAM. I have 2 - 1GB sticks in mine. I also added a VisionTek Radeon 512MB 3450 DMS59 B2 PCI Video Card. Installed Windows 7 Pro. and tried to install a Northwood 3.06 GHz having a 533MHz FSB. CPU. The retaining arm for the cpu would not hold the cpu down, perhaps because I bought it used from Ebay - (tangaishi) - $12.00 and the writing on it is worn out and it may be the wrong processor, but, Amazon has one for $99.00 which I might buy. This mobo is supposed to accept this processor and it is the fasted one that this mobo will accept. You may need to update your BIOS. Run the windows performance information and tools app. On my dimension 2400, I have a score of 2.8 with the processor being the lowest. It presently has same processor in it that you have. I will definitely be getting the P4 Northwood 3.06 GHz having a 533MHz FSB. CPU. (Less than $70.00 from ORBIT MICRO. [WORKED]. The Ram from crucial.com is $28.99 per 1GB stick. Put in the the P4 Northwood 3.06 GHz having a 533MHz FSB - The Performance Information and tools sheet gave me a 4.1 on the Processor. The Celeron was only 2.8. Everything is over 4 points except the Graphics, A 2.9 Subscore. Will have to find a better graphics card. When I installed the card, I let the computer find the drivers for me, maybe that's why my score was a 2.9. I found the box that the card came in and downloaded the drivers that were on the disk. Now it is a 3.5. The graphics card I used was a ATI Radeon 3450 Graphics Card .
